Fifteen years after the publication of the powerful Push and two years after its successful screen adaptation, the Oscar-nominated Precious, Sapphire is back with a new novel, The Kid. A sequel of sorts to Push, The Kid gives voice to Abdul Jones, the son of Precious. The novel opens with Abdul at age 9, on the day of his mother's funeral, and continues as he, per the book's deftly designed dust jacket, is “left alone to navigate in a world where love and hate are often indistinguishable, forced to confront unspeakable violence and his own dark history ... Abdul claws his way toward adulthood and toward an identity he can stand behind.” If The Kid is anything like Push, expect a searing reading experience, one marked by Sapphire's poetic use of language and visceral, acutely intimate way of describing the turbulent life of a young person struggling to transcend tough circumstances and make their way in the world. Sapphire discusses The Kid 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joseph-Beth Booksellers. Free.
