'Live From New York!'

Celebrating 40 years of Saturday Night Live, this documentary from Vietnamese-American filmmaker Bao Nguyen (documentary shorts A Tree Falls in the Forest, Julian) focuses on the early years of the show, studying the very young executive producer Lorne Michaels and his collection of comic misfits as they set the stage for what was to become a cultural institution able to withstand the poisonous slings and arrows as well as the high praise that would be showered on the program. Teeming with footage — behindthe-scenes private moments and rarely seen commentary from legendary cast members, hosts, journalists and musical guests — Live From New York! just might be the greatest hit of the greatest hit to ever air on television. (Opens Friday at Esquire Theatre) (Not Rated) Not screened in time for review
