Before Ani, there was Michelle Shocked. The "Alternative folkie" (who actually has more in common with Folk's early instigators than most of the artists who pass as "Folk" today) has been doing things her way since emerging in the mid-'80s with albums like The Texas Campfire Tapes and Short Sharp Shocked. The politically and socially conscious activist and mesmerizing songwriter's latest is the engaging new two-CD set, Deep Natural, which showcases Shocked's eclecticism by shifting between Folk Pop and Dub Reggae to country-church Gospel and some ambient soundscapes that are begging for David Lynch-ian visual accompaniment.

At the Southgate House on Friday with her band, The Perverse Allstars.
