Gov. John Kasich on Tuesday announced his plan to put $36 million in federal and local funds toward fighting prescription drug abusers. Reports say that there are more deaths related to prescription drug abuse than car accidents or suicides. Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services boards across Ohio will put in $8.9 million to match the $27 million in federal money from the Department of Education’s Rehabilitative Services Administration.—-
President Obama yesterday called on John Boehner and other congressional peons to start acting like “grownups.” Obama claims that they are an inch between his thumb and forefinger away from getting a deal done. If nothing is done by today, Obama will call the lawmakers back in tomorrow to stave off the government shutdown which could occur this Friday. "There are some things that we can't control. We can't control earthquakes, we can't control tsunamis, we can't control uprisings on the other side of the world. What we can control is our capacity to have a reasoned, fair conversation between the parties and get the business of the American people done," Obama said.
Mike Pence (R-Ind.) interview with MSNBC yesterday morning said that he’d shutdown the government to defund Planned Parenthood:
WILLIE GEIST (CO-HOST): Are you willing to hold up this entire budget over defunding Planned Parenthood?
PENCE: Well — well, of course I am.
That’s not very grownup, Mikey.
Newt Gingrich is getting better at digging holes. Reports say last month Gingrich provided $125,000 to the American Family Association Action, a hate group that Gingrich insists is not a hate group. The AFA has seemingly done its best to offend anyone you might say is “
not free white and 21 different.” In a March issue of the AFA Journal, author Randall Murphree suggested that a Jewish upbringing leads to hatred of Christians and, furthermore, a criminal lifestyle. The AFA has said that its problem with Europe is that it “is infested with the Muslim population.” AFA spokesperson Bryan Fischer has been quoted as saying that black people “rut like rabbits.” ThinkProgress today published an interview with Gingrich in which he says the AFA is not a hate group, but a “Christian” group. You must be confused sir, because P.O.D. is a “Christian” group. What you’re talking about is definitely a hate group.
The most recent data for the Candie’s Foundation says that Bristol Palin raked in about $260,000 helping raise awareness for teen pregnancy back in 2009. Lil’ Palin was appointed as a teen ambassador for the New York-based foundation just months after giving birth to her son Tripp at the age of 18. “If I can prevent even one girl from getting pregnant, I will feel a sense of accomplishment," Palin said in an interview with the AP after she was appointed.
Reports today say that Charlie Sheen is trying to get his catchphrases and probably his poor decision-making skills trademarked. Sheen filed trademark applications back in late March to trademark his name, signature and nicknames for his home and girlfriends (Sober Valley Lodge and Sheen’s Goddesses, respectively). Sheen is also moving to trademark phrases such as “Winning,” “Tiger Blood” and “Defeat is Not an Option.”
The Reds beat the Astros 8-2 last night and are off to their best start since 1990. The last time they started the season 4-0, they won the World Series. “I'll say we're probably going to lose a game before long, but if we go 162-0, we'll be making some serious headlines," said Chris Heisey, who drove in three runs in last night’s win.
