Lots of musicians talk a good game about having the audience “be a part of the show,” but few if any bring the crowd into the concert experience like Electronic/Orchestral Pop mad scientist Dan Deacon. At last summer’s Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati, Deacon showed the power (and high entertainment value) of his interactive approach, commanding his fans to participate with in-sync movement, en masse. Deacon’s music is intricate and textural (particularly on his latest, America), but also fun and frenetic enough to soundtrack his over-the-top live performances. Deacon has also been experimenting with even more audience participation, this time in the form of a colored lights app, which syncs with other devices during his shows.
