The It’s Commonly Jazz free concert series has one of the hottest young names in Jazz Thursday: the Etienne Charles Quintet.

Charles is a Trinidad-born trumpeter who has been winning accolades from The New York Times, JazzTimes and DownBeat. He teaches trumpet at Michigan State University in addition to being an invigorating and in-demand performing/recording musician. His latest album, Creole Soul, features his exploration of Afro-Caribbean roots on original compositions as well as interpretations of Thelonious Monk’s “Green Chimneys” and Bob Marley’s “Turn Your Lights Down Low.”

Charles’ standout melodic development and rhythmic propulsion are evident in both his combo work and his improvisations, so this show should be energetic and virtuosic.

6-8 p.m. Free. Seasongood Pavilion, Eden Park, 950 Eden Park Drive, Mount Adams, itscommonlyjazz.com.
