The current Music of Change: Hymns, Blues & Rock at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is an exhibition with broad appeal, something that will likely cause a lot of potential visitors previously on the fence to finally visit the riverfront museum. The “time capsule of American history and the music that drove the change” is a clever concept that encompasses everything from slave spirituals and the role music played in the Civil Rights movement to the genesis and impact of “Uniquely American” music like Jazz, Ragtime, Blues and early Rock & Roll. The topic of African American’s contributions to popular music and the role music has played in the community could fill 10 museums, but through creative exhibits and smart curation, Music of Change manages to present a fascinating look at the crucial role music has played in African American culture.
