In junior high school, The English Beat was my favorite band, causing me to wear out my cassette copy of the group’s 1980 debut, I Just Can’t Stop It. Emerging from the British 2 Tone Ska scene of the late ’70s/early ’80s, the original band (which lasted just five years) transcended the genre thanks to frontman Dave Wakeling’s brilliant, whip-smart songwriting, which added a Pop punch to the Beat’s dynamic, worldly sound. As a result, unlike most albums from the early ’80s, The Beat’s three-album discography has held up incredibly well. Along with Beat classics, the band plays a few songs by General Public (Wakeling’s post-Beat group) and has been performing tunes from its forthcoming album, Here We Go Love, the band’s first full-length since 1982’s Special Beat Service.
