Music Tonight: The Spits and Dave Alvin

Punk Rock in Northside and Roots Rock in Oakley

Seattle-based underground heroes The Spits bring their riotous roadshow to Northside's Mayday for an evening of face-melting, over-the-top Punk Rock theatrics, sure to please anyone who feels “Punk” ain’t what it used to be. Joining the melee is the progressive Punk band TV Ghost, a sludgy but no less abrasive crew from Lafayette, Ind., that, like The Spits, has put out records on esteemed Garage Punk imprint In the Red Records. Kicking off the night is Cincinnati’s contribution to the kick-ass modern Punk Zeitgeist, Vacation. Showtime is 9 p.m. And, unlike most Mayday shows, there is a cover charge ($7).

Dave Alvin returns to Cincinnati tonight for a show at the 20th Century Theater in Oakley. The show starts at 8 p.m. with a set from great local Roots band The Kentucky Struts. Tickets are $25. Alvin and his band The Guilty Ones are out supporting the Blues-blastin,' Roots-rockin' live album Eleven Eleven, recorded in Ann Arbor last year (the night after his last stop in the area). Yep Roc Records is releasing an expanded edition of the live set, due for release in April.
