It’s hard to imagine that it’s been 32 years since John Bell and Michael Houser met at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., and began the friendship that would quickly lead to the wildly successful Southern Rock/Jam outfit known as Widespread Panic. Christened after Houser’s debilitating anxiety attacks, the band played bars and frat parties for years before releasing its first album, 1988’s Space Wrangler.
Over the course of the next 25 years, 10 studio albums, nine legitimate live releases, more than a dozen video/DVD efforts and countless audience-taped concert recordings, Widespread Panic has become one of America’s most beloved and supremely talented Jam bands, adroitly combining Southern Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk and Prog into an exquisite sonic gumbo.
