Editor & Publisher has been running updates on daily newspaper endorsements in the presidential race here. The journalism industry magazine has the tally, as of today, at 121 endorsements for Barack Obama and 42 for John McCain and notes that in 2004 the spread was much closer, with John Kerry edging out President Bush 213-205.
E&P isn't counting weekly newspapers like CityBeat, which endorsed Obama last week.
It looks like every major daily paper in Ohio has published an endorsement except The Cincinnati Enquirer. Wonder what they're waiting for?—-
The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Dayton Daily News, Toledo Blade, Akron Beacon Journal and five others have endorsed Obama. The Columbus Dispatch and Findlay Courier have endorsed McCain.
Maybe Gannett newspapers are being instructed to take their time with endorsements, as The Louisville Courier-Journal, Indianapolis Star, Arizona Republic, Des Moines Register and Honolulu Advertiser haven't published endorsements either. On the other hand, Gannett's Detroit Free Press and Nashville Tennessean have already come out in favor of Obama. Maybe The Enquirer editorial board is burning the midnight oil trying to find a way to justify endorsing McCain.
Speaking of endorsements, we just sent this week's CityBeat to the printer — when you see it Wednesday it'll include endorsements for Steve Driehaus and Victoria Wulsin in Ohio Congressional Districts, Michael Kelley in Kentucky's 4th District and Bruce Lunsford for Kentucky Senator.
