Although it’s closer to the middle of winter than the middle of summer, now’s the perfect season for a dreamlike getaway just in time for Valentine’s Day. Cincinnati Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream — presented at the Aronoff Center this weekend — offers a delightful chance to escape winter doldrums.
Originally choreographed by the Ballet’s CEO and Artistic Director Victoria Morgan in 2003 (and again in 2005), the enchantingly re-imagined show is filled with dance, humor and drama, and is set to Felix Mendelssohn’s lively score played by Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra with vocals from Xavier University Women’s Chorus. This production illuminates this Shakespearean classic’s delightful complexities through a new collaboration — Cincinnati Shakespeare Company lends a couple of actors to perform selected dramatic readings alongside the dancers. Describing the production as “romantic, whimsical and wacky,” Morgan says, “Dance can tell a story, but with a story as elaborate as Midsummer, sometimes you want someone to talk.”
