Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre opens its 34th-annual summer show this week at the Covedale Center, where 80 local teens will twist and pony their way through the raucous musical Hairspray.

'Hairspray'

Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre opens its 34th-annual summer show this week at the Covedale Center, where 80 local teens will twist and pony their way through the raucous musical Hairspray. Set in 1962 Baltimore, it’s about a Rock & Roll TV show that represents the dream of every kid to become a star, especially lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad. This big cast brings together kids from 33 area schools. Many of CYPT’s performers — there are 2,400 alumni — have gone on to theater careers. It’s a safe bet that there will be some more from this year’s crew.
