With its “Musicals Redux” series, the musical theater program at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) annually resurrects a show that’s been largely forgotten. This year the production in the Cohen Family Studio Theater will be Cole Porter’s Out of This World. A free adaptation of the Roman comedy Amphitryon by Plautus, Out of This World pits Roman gods and goddesses against each other with amusing results. The CCM production features 13 characters and a chorus of 30 additional performers in a complicated plot. Porter wrote the show in 1950, following his big 1948 hit, Kiss Me, Kate. Out of This World features the popular song “From This Moment On,” which was originally cut from the show but was subsequently restored. According to director Roger Grodsky, “Out of This World has an enchanting score and even though the Broadway run was only 157 performances, this music deserves to be more widely heard.” So give it a chance. Admission is free, but reservations are required.
