Playing off of Union Terminal's role as the inspiration for DC Comics' Hall of Justice, local "superheroes" are gathering for a special operation this Saturday.

Operation Backpack, with help from the Bootsy Collins Foundation, Closing the Health Gap, Michele Young and Gregory S. Young Co., LPA, will be giving away 700 school-supply-filled backpacks from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 14 in the rotunda of the Cincinnati Museum Center.

“Thanks to our hometown heroes, Patti and Bootsy and Elizabeth Pierce and her team at Cincinnati Museum Center, we have brought together heroes from across the city, including the Reds, Bengals and FC Cincinnati, to create a justice league for our children," said event co-organizer Young in a press release. "This is our first mission but not our last. We will continue to come together so our city can be one where children can imagine themselves as rock stars, sports stars and scientists and can find their passions and interests under the Rotunda of Cincinnati Museum Center, a place of dreams and inspiration for not only our children but for all of us.”

Backpacks are available on a first-come, first-served basis, filled with back-to-school essentials provided by the Kyle Plush Answer the Call Foundation, the Bengals D'Ante Smith, Jeff Ruby's Culinary Entertainment and others.

In addition to the backpack giveaway, the community event will also feature free COVID-19 vaccines from the Cincinnati Health Department (currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has approved the Pfizer vaccine for those ages 12 and up), food boxes from the Freestore Foodbank, dental hygiene products from Closing the Health Gap, a book giveaway from the Cincinnati Public Library and free admission to the Cincinnati History Museum and Museum of Natural History & Science.

Members of the Cincinnati Bengals and Ben-Gals will also be on hand for appearances and drills, along with the Cincinnati Reds' Mr. Redlegs, FC Cincinnati's Gary mascot and members of Saturday HoopsDJ Ouiwey will provide the tunes.

Cincinnati Museum Center, 1301 Western Ave., Queesgate.
