Based on Hubert Monteilhet’s novel Le Retour des cendres, Phoenix, from co-screenwriter and director Christian Petzold, tracks the tale of Nelly Lenz (Nina Hoss). The severely scarred concentration camp survivor undergoes facial reconstruction surgery, which allows her to emerge unrecognizable and begin a desperate search through post-war Berlin for her husband Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), the man she believes might have betrayed her to the Nazis. The situation becomes far more complicated when she finally connects with an unsuspecting Johnny, who seeks to convince her to join him in a dark scheme.
