The holidays might be over, but you can still catch the holiday exhibition at PHYLLIS WESTON & ANNIE BOLLING GALLERY (2003 Madison Road, O'Bryonville). The show highlights significant Russian Impressionists, including ALEKSEI PAVLOVICH EREMENKO and PYOTR FOMIN, among others. The gallery is known locally and internationally for their expertise and collection of Russian Impressionists, and this exhibition demonstrates that, providing a window into the unstable past and uncertain future of a truly beautiful country. The artists contrast the splendor of the Russian landscape with an individual struggle in a ravaged society, providing scenes of inspiration as well as scenes of devastation. In conjunction with this exhibition, the gallery also offers works by Cincinnati artist FRANK MCELWAIN, known for his rich palette and distinctive interpretation of the idealistic beauty of American life. McElwain features a variety of subjects, both historical and contemporary — he's best known for his official "Tall Stacks" painting. Don't miss this moving exhibition. Through Jan. 31.
Start the new year off with exposure to exemplary art and artists, and there's no place better to do that than CARL SOLWAY GALLERY, (424 Findlay St.) where two exhibitions open in just days. ALBERT PALEY, distinguished American artist for more than 30 years, offers Sculpture, Drawings & Functional Objects, which features work in various metalworking disciplines, including sculpture, drawings, monoprints, furniture and more.

ALBERT PALEY, distinguished American artist for more than 30 years, offers Sculpture, Drawings & Functional Objects, which features work in various metalworking disciplines, including sculpture, drawings, monoprints, furniture and more. His work is distinctive in many ways, one of which is the way he integrates art and architecture in his pieces. In fact, Paley is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects, their highest award to a non-architect. His site-specific installations can be seen all over the country, most recently in Washington D.C. He's currently working on an entrance gate for the chapel at the National Cathedral. Paley has also been invited to explore his vision in sculpture for potential inclusion at One River Plaza at Yeatman's Cove on Cincinnati's riverfront. In the second floor gallery, view prints from SAM FRANCIS, one of the youngest of the Abstract Expressionist painters, a group that included Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. Francis' exhibition will include lithographs, aquatints and screenprints, created between 1963 and 1991. Be among the first to view these extraordinary artists. Opening reception Friday, 5-9 p.m. Through April 7. ...

Currently on view at FOCUS GALLERY is Providence: Art by Robyn (Nomadical) Roth, Verses: Art by Brian (Proud American) Level. Focus, a piercing palace/art gallery in Covington, provides the perfect venue for this exhibition, which takes an atypical direction, offering a welcome blend of intensity with enthusiasm. ROBYN ROTH's work has a soft sense of tranquil serenity, using a pallet so rich, it's almost dreamlike. However, in comparison to Roth, BRIAN LEVEL seems to approach his work with a harder edge — there's a mythical quality to his works. An exciting mix of soft yet technically flawless work hovering alongside flashy tattoo art, this exhibition delivers energy that not only works, but also works well. (Jacquelyn Vaughn) Grade: B
