Gerard Butler fights valiantly to maintain a curious balance between action-oriented fare for guys like 300 and Law Abiding Citizen and rom-coms that slip and fall into a sub-category that, to be painfully honest, repels those same males who trudge to theaters for date nights with their intendeds. Playing for Keeps, about a former soccer star struggling to stay relevant to his young son while fighting off the attention of a host of soccer moms, sadly, doesn’t look like a keeper, at least not for the lads, despite the tantalizing presence of Jessica Biel. Now open in select theaters. (PG-13) Not screened for review
