Peeking behind the veil of secrecy surrounding the life and times of JD Salinger with a more complete telling of his life pre- and post-Catcher in the Rye, screenwriter-producer turned documentary director Shane Salerno (Savages) incorporates the thoughts and words of a host of filmmakers and writers — from Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton and John Cusack to Tom Wolfe and Gore Vidal — to contextualize the far-reaching impact of Salinger on creativity and the development of the artistic self during the 20th century. The challenge is as daunting as trying to wrap your arms around such notions, or more impossibly, the man himself. Opens Sept. 20 at Mariemont Theatre. (PG-13) Not screened in time for review
