Music Tonight: When it was announced that beloved Newport venue the Southgate House had switched ownership, effectively ending the current management's 30-plus year run at the club, and would close after this Saturday's (now officially sold out) New Year's Eve show, the remaining open dates filled quickly with local acts wanting to play the Southgate "one more time." But one nationally-known out-of-town act, Knoxville-spawned AltCountry/Roots Rock band The V-Roys, also wanted in on the action. And they're reuniting to do it. Tonight, The V-Roys play the Southgate — site of many memorable shows by the band over the years — for the first of only two scheduled concerts, part of a mini-promo push for the new retrospective release, Sooner or Later. Proof that the sting of losing one of the Midwest's best music venues is felt far beyond Greater Cincinnati. Tonight's show kicks off at 8 p.m. with local openers Monkeytonk. Tickets are $30 at the door, while they last. Below, check out a homemade clip from a V-Roys Southgate show back in 1998.—-
Momentous Happenings in Music History for December 27
On this day in 1992, singer/musician/actor Harry Connick Jr. proved even Sinatra-styled crooners can forget to take their handguns out of their luggage. Connick was arrested at JFK International Airport in New York after a 9mm pistol was found in his carry-on. Connick — who maintained he was confused and misinformed about New York gun laws — took a plea deal and did some community service to make the charge go away.
Born This Day: Musical movers and shakers born Dec. 27 include: Guitarist for Classic Rock band Foreigner, Mick Jones (1944); Dire Straits co-founder (with brother Mark) David Knopfler (1952); bassist for Post Punk legends Killing Joke and acclaimed producer/remixer Martin Glover, better known as Youth (1960); and noted drummer Terry Bozzio (1950).
Bozzio is most widely remembered for his time with New Wave hitmakers Missing Persons, the band he founded with his wife Dale and later Duran Duran guitarist Warren Cuccurullo in 1980. But he is a drummer of virtuoso proportions, making his name in Frank Zappa's band in the mid-’70s. Check out Terry gettin' down with Zappa in the concert film Baby Snakes below.
