Music Tonight: Louisville Indie/Folk singer/songwriter Cheyenne Marie Mize has been on a fast track in the music biz over the past year. A member of a couple of rootsy acts in the rich Louisville music scene, once she broke out on her own, she began to draw increased attention for her lovely, ethereal sound. Last year when Mize performed in town, she was on the verge of releasing a new EP, but it was delayed … for good reason. Mize had inked a deal with Yep Rock Records (home to Nick Lowe, Liam Finn, Fountains of Wayne, John Doe and Paul Weller) and that EP, We Don't Need, became her first release for the label. Just released Jan. 24, We Don't Need fleshes out Mize's wispy sound (particularly with some creative rhythmic additives), but that dreamy, ghostly soul still hovers above each of the five songs. Momentous Happenings in Music History for February 8
On this day in 2004, eclectic Hip Hop duo OutKast scored the Album of the Year Grammy for its two-disc release Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. It's been a long eight years since (so long I actually wrote "two-disc") and, outside of the less than satisfying Idlewild soundtrack, OutKast has denied fans new material outside of solo work and a few leaks. The duo did move to Epic Records and "sources" were quoted as saying a new album would be out early this year. But there hasn't been a peep of late. So for now, we'll just console ourselves listening to Big Boi's solid solo offerings and watching Andre 3000's Gillette commercials with Adrian Brody.
But seriously — we'll always have Stankonia, an album I can still listen to once a week and never get bored. Has there been a better Hip Hop single in the past 20 years better than this:
Born This Day: Musical movers and shakers born Feb. 8 include: Folk singer/songwriter Tom Rush (1941); on-again/off-again BoDeans member Sammy Llanas (1961); frontman for Rock & Roll survivors Motley Crue, Vince Neil (1961); and a Rock & Roll hero of sorts (despite being a lowly "actor"), James Dean (1931).
Hard to imagine Dean turning 81 years old today — he'll be forever frozen in time as that beautiful young man who lit up the sliver screen in Giant, East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause. After dying at the age of 24 in a car accident, America's greatest icon of cool became not only an influence on demeanor and style, but also inspired numerous musical tributes and name-drops. Everyone from Lou Reed to The Eagles to Hillary Duff have mentioned Dean in song. Here are a few samples, from days gone by through right now:
