The best ticket this weekend could be the touring production of Spring Awakening, onstage at the Aronoff Center through Sunday. Because its subject matter is a tad gloomy — and a bit edgy for the typical Broadway show-goer — you shouldn't have any problem getting a seat for the 2007 Tony Award winner. And if you're a CityBeat reader, I suspect you'll like this one, even if you're not a theater regular. —-
The show has a kind of Indie Rock soundtrack, and the stories of the central characters are the kind of topics and themes that populate independent art films. (The musical is based on an 1891 play that went unproduced for several decades because it was controversial.) This show cleverly blends today's music with people and costumes from a century earlier, knitted together with some wild dancing mapped out by contemporary choreographer Bill T. Jones. (Check out our feature story on Spring Awakening here and my review here.)
If you can score a seat onstage, grab the chance — you'll really catch the show's raw energy. But it flows out into the auditorium, too. Tickets can be purchased here or by calling 513-621-2787.
