Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy are back onstage at Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati. Those characters — played by Sara Mackie, Mia Gentile, Brooke Rucidlo and Denise Devlin — kept ETC audiences coming back for more in the spring of 2010 for The Marvelous Wonderettes, the theater's biggest box office hit ever, extended three times to meet the demand for tickets. This summer you can return for the regional premiere of Winter Wonderettes, a Christmas-holiday themed show with Pop holiday tunes from the 1960s, including "Jingle Bell Rock," "Santa Baby" and "It's a Marshmallow World." —-Should be a lot of fun and a perfect way to chill during a hot summer.
Ace music director Scot Woolley is heading up the music side of things, while ETC's D. Lynn Meyers is staging the merriment, this time at a holiday party in the local hardware store. The show opens tonight (June 24) and is planned to run for a month. This weekend could be your best chance to walk in and buy a ticket — you can be sure that they'll be scarce in a week or two. Call the box office at 513-421-3555 or visit ETC's website to check on ticket availability.
And if you're stuck at home on Saturday evening, here's a new option: WVXU (91.7 FM) this week adds a new program for theater lovers to its schedule. From 8 p.m.-10 p.m. every Saturday the NPR news/talk station will broadcast L.A. Theatre Works, theatrical plays recorded live for radio, featuring some of the best known and most dynamic actors working today.
This weekend the series kicks off with Oscar Wilde's hilarious farce The Importance of Being Earnest, starring James Marsters, Charles Busch and Matthew Wolf. Past productions have stared Alfred Molina, Paul Giamatti, Annette Benning, Hilary Swank and Hector Elizondo. In fact, L. A. Theatre Works has more than 400 recorded plays in its library. The program has been around for awhile: It's on the air in more than 80 cities and listened to regularly by at least 7 million fans. It's a great addition to WVXU's lineup.
