Not long before Earth Day, Arbor Day and other green-focused days there’s a vast call for volunteers to do all kinds of thing from trash pick up to planting more green stuff. But after it’s all done, there’s little information provided about what was accomplished.—-
Keep Cincinnati Beautiful decided a little post-event publicity was in order and provided results for the 2009 clean up efforts. Here are a few stats.
6,500 volunteers
90 area communities
300,000 pounds of litter collected
25,000 pounds of recyclables collected
1,100 tires collected
“Additionally, 2,125 K-12 students did their own cleanups during the week around their schools,” according to the press release. “Besides picking up litter, Tri-State volunteers beautified parks and recreation areas, cleaned riverbanks, collected recyclables, removed scrap tires and planted thousands of flowers and trees.”
A rather unusual finds included a 400 lb broiler (it took 4 men to move it) in College Hill and the West End’s Billy Goat (a street sweeper) “ate” 340 lbs of trash. This was on top of the usual mattresses, toilets, refrigerators, dead possums and tires.
Price Hill Will and Great American Insurance volunteers planted an edible garden while 300 West and East Price Hill volunteers cleaned and beautified the surrounding area.
