The latest slice of life from British director Ken Loach (Riff-Raff, My Name Is Joe) finds Robbie (Paul Brannigan), having just avoided going to jail and facing the daunting realities of fatherhood, ready to embrace life anew. Despite his best intentions, change proves difficult for Robbie. Loach will certainly unearth both comedy and drama in the tale, but what we’ve come to expect and appreciate even more is the life lesson without the stern sense of preachiness. When Loach has strayed into sermonizing, it has been due to the more overt political nature of his stories, like the Adrien Brody-led Bread and Roses from 2000, but here, The Angels’ Share seems more intimate and primed to speak to individual experience.
