Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) has been the focal point of the X-Men saga, not simply the face of the franchise on film, but also its heart and soul. After a lackluster solo attempt to tell his backstory, The Wolverine tackles the wild mutant’s ronin phase, re-configuring his timeline a bit, but there’s an emotional logic at work. Wolvie has lost another loved one (Jean Grey) and longs to lay his immortal burden down. The problem is we know he won’t be able to do so without a (largely internal) fight. James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) helms this classic showdown. Now in theaters. (PG-13) Not screened in time for review.
