Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) is all grown up and eager to lead his own family on an epic road trip to Walley World, in what is jokingly played as a reset of the Vacation series. The writing and directing team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein makes sure to remind us throughout that their Vacation is part of a storied tradition, but this time out, the story doesn’t earn any real distinction of its own. Helms and Christina Applegate as his wife Debbie, with Skyler Gisondo and Steele Stebbins as his sons, gamely serve themselves up as crash-test dummies for all of the gags and physical assaults, but we’ve seen it all before and, to be honest, the Vacation package had already lost its ability to elicit even faint smiles and chuckles toward the end of its run.
