No. 2: Mazunte Taqueria
5207 Madison Road, Madisonville
“The beer battered tacos are my favorite, and I've had fish tacos both in Mexico and South America. Theirs are the best—the dinners are authentic ranchero Mexican and not swimming in cheese sauce as most entrees are served in our Americanized Tex Mex restaurants. It's a wonderful little eatery with outdoor seating for two or ten or more.” -Mary M.

Mazunte Centro
    611 Main St., Downtown
Inspired by the vibrancy of Mexico City, Centro still serves the classics — tacos and tostadas, tequila and Topo Chico. But a handful of dishes exclusive to this location were added to the menu, namely tortas and tlayudas (imagine a love child between a Mexican pizza and a giant loaded nacho). Out-the-door-tacos for those on their lunch break and lingering evenings sipping tequila are both served with the same warm hospitality. Although folks in Mexico indulge in a leisurely meal and siesta midday and grab street tacos at night, Americans are more accustomed to working through lunch and partying after dark. Mazunte serves Mexico City food on a Cincinnati schedule.

Please
    1405 Clay St., Over-the-Rhine, pleasecincinnati.com.
Tucked away on Clay Street in Over-the-Rhine, Please serves modern and artful small plates. Chef Ryan Santos helmed Please as a gypsy pop-up from 2011 to 2016 and the design of the cozy brick and mortar is note-perfect down to the very instagrammable bathroom (search #pleasepotty for guest selfies with the abstract hand-painted wall tile). It feels like a first-class affair because it is one — each four-course dinner is served with fanfare and attention. Diners can choose from a vegetarian, pescetarian or omnivore menu, although gluten-free options are always available. Please also offers an à la carte and bar menu.
Must try: The apple aebleskivers are a unique interpretation of the flavors found in Cincinnati chili — Danish-style apple donut holes are topped with maple and shredded, sweet and caramel-like Norwegian gjetost cheese.
