Published in time for his 90th birthday, Judge Nathaniel R. Jones’ new biography, Answering the Call: An Autobiography of the Modern Struggle to End Racial Discrimination in America, shares the life of a man who has spent his career trying to make the world a better and more just place. Jones grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, where he began a law career that eventually led to a range of roles and accomplishments: He was the first African-American assistant U.S. Attorney General; served as general council for the NAACP, where he led the fight for desegregation; and served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit for 23 years. Jones, who currently serves as senior counsel at a law firm in Cincinnati, discusses Answering the Call at Joseph-Beth.
