First theater production out of the pipeline this month comes from Untethered Theater Company at the intimate Clifton Performance Theater: John Kolvenbach’s offbeat comedy Love Song (through Jan 15.) The show debuted at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater in 2006 and was staged at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in 2008. It’s the story of a quirky loner named Beane whose workaholic sister frets about him while avoiding her own turmoil around her failing marriage. Beane’s world changes when he encounters a young woman who burglarizes his apartment. They make a strange connection and his attitudes about almost everything are turned around. Untethered produced its first show a year ago; this is its second production. One of the group’s founders, MaryKate Moran, is in the cast and she says, “We love the humor and pathos of this show and thought it’d be the perfect way to kick off 2012.” The company is excited to perform in the small space at 404 Ludlow Ave. Moran says, “Love Song is so rich that the most rewarding way to perform it is up close with the audience.” This will be quite different from the Playhouse production on its large Marx mainstage. 8 p.m. Friday-Sunday.
