Cincinnati’s Longbottom Bird Rescue is continuing its mission to save ducks across the city with its virtual duck sponsorship initiative, allowing you to “adopt” one of its feathered residents.

Executive director Jimmy Longbottom launched the virtual adoption/sponsorship program in 2024 to help support rescue and care efforts throughout the year. Longbottom also hopes the program provides educational opportunities and helps combat pet duck abandonment, especially around this time of year when many will buy ducklings for Easter and later abandon them as the ducks mature.

“We’ve seen firsthand the challenges these special creatures face once they outgrow the cute ‘Easter duckling’ phase,” said Longbottom. “Our goal is to educate the public about the responsibilities of duck care and to prevent the abandonment of these animals, which leads to their unnecessary suffering.”

To sponsor a duck, you can visit the organization’s website to see the available ducks. The sponsorship is $120 per duck and lasts from the moment of purchase through December 2025. Each sponsorship includes a photo and card of your duck, along with some information about them. You’ll also have your name displayed on Longbottom Bird Ranch’s website, and if you sponsor an unnamed duck, you get the chance to name them. And don’t forget to watch the rescue’s social media for the latest adventures of your adoptee.

The rescue will also host a duck meet-and-greet on Saturday, April 19 at Braxton Barrel House in Ft. Mitchell from 3-6 p.m. The event will offer attendees the chance to meet some of the virtually adoptable ducks and learn more about Longbottom Bird Rescue’s work.
