Facial recognition technology is coming to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport as early as Memorial Day Weekend.

Mark Howell, regional spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) told CityBeat the Credential Authentication Technology 2.0 (CAT-2) compares the traveler’s photo on their ID against the in-person, real-time photo.

“Once the CAT-2 confirms the match, a TSA officer will verify and the traveler can proceed to security screening, without ever exchanging a boarding pass. TSA officers can perform additional passenger verification if needed,” Howell said.

Five machines used to perform facial recognition will start to be installed later this week and will be up and running by Memorial Day weekend, but just for TSA PreCheck travelers at first.

Howell said travelers who don’t want their faces screened can ask for alternative ID verification.

“Photos captured by CAT-2 units are never stored or used for any other purpose than immediate identity verification,” Howell told CityBeat. “Travelers who do not wish to participate in the facial matching process can opt out in favor of an alternative identity verification process.”

TSA announced the Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract in April. The $128 million contract was awarded to Idemia Identity and Security USA for the manufacturing and maintenance of the CAT-2 systems.
