The Cincinnati Reds are having some late nights lately.

On Aug. 1, the Reds traded left fielder Tommy Pham to the Boston Red Sox for either a player to be named later or cash. The Reds announced the move at 9:30 p.m. through an email to reporters and on social media channels.

Just before the Reds announced the trade, Pham posted, "Thank you @reds" on Instagram.
Pham, a veteran who played for the Reds for less than a season, was scratched from Monday's lineup shortly before the Reds' game against the Miami Marlins in Florida. The Reds won 3-1, with speedball pitcher Hunter Greene notching eight strikeouts over six innings.

The Pham trade comes three days after the Reds traded starting pitcher Luis Castillo to the Seattle Mariners for four prospects and less than 24 hours before the MLB trade deadline of 6 p.m. Aug. 2. The Reds also traded outfielder Tyler Naquin to the Mets on July 28 in exchange for two minor-league players.
Pham was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014, playing in the Gateway City until 2018, when he moved to the Tampa Bay Rays and San Diego Padres. He then landed in Cincinnati shortly after the MLB lockout earlier this year on a $6 million contract with a $6 million option and $1.5 million buyout.

According to Baseball Reference, Pham is batting .238 in 340 at-bats over 91 games. As of press time, he has 11 home runs for 2022.

Pham has attracted interesting drama over the years, including being stabbed outside a San Diego strip club in 2020. Earlier this season, Pham was suspended for three days for slapping a San Francisco Giants player over a fantasy football argument.
In a July 6 Instagram post, Pham said he'd been selected as an ambassador for the Bigger Than Sneakers Cincinnati SneakerBall, a celeb-laden black-tie fundraiser and celebration of sneaker culture that's scheduled for Aug. 5. It's unclear if his trade to the Red Sox will affect his appearance at the event in the Queen City.

The Reds will continue the series with the Marlins through Aug. 3.
