If you live in the poetic world of rhythm and flow and have a passion for promoting poetry and encouraging others to read and write it, there’s now a chance to join the Mercantile Library as its newest poet laureate.
Since first partnering in Cincinnati’s Poet Laureate program in 2015, the library has hosted three laureates: Pauletta Hansel (2016-18), Manuel Iris (2018-21), and Yalie Saweda Kamara (2022-25). The next poet laureate’s term will last through 2027 and is stipend-supported.
During their tenure, the poet laureate will promote poetry appreciation, encourage the reading and writing of poetry throughout the city and compose and read poems for special events. They will also participate in State of the City events, Poetry Month in April and other official city and Mercantile events.
The submission window to become the next poet laureate is open until March 30. The Mercantile Library says it’s looking for a poet who lives in Cincinnati and whose work exemplifies the character and spirit of the city. It is also looking for a candidate whose work shows a commitment to the art form, as well as community engagement.
To apply, you must be 21 or older, live within the city of Cincinnati and have a history of curated literary publication. Applicants should submit a CV or resume, a one-page vision statement detailing the role they would play in the community as the poet laureate and a sample of their work (up to 10 pages of poetry).
Materials should be sent to poet@mercantilelibrary.com by March 30. The new poet laureate will be named in May by the Mercantile Library and Mayor Aftab Pureval based on recommendations from a 12-member Poet Laureate Advisory Committee.
