A devastating volcanic eruption. A city frozen in time and forgotten for 1,700 years. The tragedy of Pompeii will come to the Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC) in February in a new exhibit.

POMPEII: The Exhibition will premiere at CMC on Feb. 16 and feature over 150 artifacts from the historic city on loan from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy. Visitors will also get to experience the sights, sounds and sensations of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried Pompeii and its people in ash and debris on Aug. 24, 79 A.D., preserving everything for centuries.

“Pompeii is a remarkable story that exists as both ancient legend and archaeological treasure, providing a timeless snapshot of daily life in the Roman Empire,” Elizabeth Pierce, president and CEO of CMC, said in a press release. “We’re honored to be entrusted with these archaeological treasures and to once again bring the world to Cincinnati, and to do so in immersive fashion as we transport guests back in time to a period of splendor and a day of timeless catastrophe.”

The exhibit is designed to be a media-rich, object-based experience that will immerse guests in the fateful morning of the eruption. Displayed artifacts include still-vibrant mosaics and frescoes, gladiator armor, statues, jewelry and everyday objects that will provide a portal to the past to see how Pompeii citizens lived.

“We wanted to bring this historical event back to life and allow guests to relive it vividly,” John Norman, president of World Heritage Exhibitions and producer of POMPEII: The Exhibition, said in the release. “Cincinnati Museum Center’s reputation as a premiere venue makes it a perfect location to exhibit these international treasures and provide audiences an opportunity to experience life in the bustling city of Pompeii before time essentially stopped.”

When visitors enter the exhibit, they’ll have the scene set for them in an introductory theater, with a video featuring dramatic reconstructions of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. There will also be a reproduced atrium from a Roman villa that will act as the entry point to the ancient city.

In addition to the artifacts, the exhibit will also include a new 3D experience that shows the different stages of the eruption and a simulated 4D eruption theater that allows visitors to experience the natural disaster’s deadly impact. This will culminate in the reveal of full body casts of people who were asphyxiated by extreme heat and toxic gases.

Through Jan. 21, guests can sign up for presale access and be instantly upgraded to VIP tickets with no entry times and same-day re-entry. Presale will be from Jan. 22-28 and general admission tickets go on sale Jan. 29. You can sign up for presale access here.

POMPEII: The Exhibition opens Feb. 16 and runs until July 28.
