Parlor Pizza Project, which opened in Hyde Park in February, is rebranding after just over a month of business. The new name? Saint Francis Apizza.
Owner Alex Plattner, a Cincinnati native, has been making pizza under the moniker Parlor Pizza Project for many years now, from when he lived in Minneapolis to after he moved back to Cincinnati in June 2020. Parlor Pizza Project did a series of Sunday night dinner pop-ups at Oakley Wines from August 2020 to January 2021 as well before opening a brick-and-mortar shop in Hyde Park.
After Parlor Pizza Project opened its brick-and-mortar on Feb. 19, Plattner received an email on Feb. 24 with the subject line: “Parlor Pizza Project: Trademark Infringement."
“I don’t want to be overly dramatic, but it’s not fun to have to ‘rebrand’ one month in,” Plattner said in a Facebook post.
Plattner did not name the restaurant group that sent the cease and desist email.
“Receiving this letter and deciding how to respond was a maddening experience for me,” Plattner said in the post. “We are not located in the same city, our concept is very different and our name is different.”
Instead of fighting for the Parlor Pizza Project name, Plattner decided to rebrand.
The name “Saint Francis Apizza” comes from Plattner’s uncle, Francis “Frank” Hattemer, who Plattner says is “one of the best and most generous cooks” he knows. Plattner’s middle name and the middle name of his late cousin, George Hattemer, is also Francis. “Apizza” comes from a pizzeria in Portland, Oregon: Apizza Scholls. Plattner says Apizza Scholls is his “favorita pizzeria in the world.”
While the name will change in mid-April, Plattner emphasized in the Facebook post that nothing about the restaurant will be changing in regards to ownership, staff, location and pizza.
You can order pizza by phone starting at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. When you call, you can select a pick-up time.
Parlor Pizza Project is located at 3392 Erie Ave., Hyde Park. More info (for now) at parlorpizzaprojectcincy.com.
