An Erlanger bakery is closed as its owner continues to recover from a July car accident.

Vic Riley, the owner of Square Peg Bakery, which just opened in May, suffered a traumatic brain injury and several other significant injuries in a crash on I-75 south on July 4, according to a post on the bakery’s Facebook page. A GoFundMe was launched shortly after the crash to help support Riley as she recovered.

In a Facebook post Monday, Riley announced that she would be closing Square Peg’s Erlanger retail location, citing the ongoing struggle of operating a storefront while managing injuries from the crash.

“Truth is, I am a human being and between a car accident, a divorce, long-term neurological damage, and the reality of trying to run a storefront —it just wasn’t sustainable. Period,” Riley shared. “I’ve taken some time to breathe, to step away from the internet bullies (I wish I was kidding), and to figure out what the next chapter for SPB looks like. Spoiler alert: it’s not the end.”

Riley says customers can still find her cinnamon rolls at different retail locations around Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. She will share a weekly schedule of cinnamon roll locations every Monday starting next week.

“I’ll be stepping back from social media and most front-facing bakery events for a while—my recovery and mental health have to come first. But the love, support, and community you’ve given me through every pivot has been unreal, and I don’t take a single ounce of it for granted,” Riley wrote.
