While summer temperatures soar, one of the best things about this warm season is the variety of fresh produce offered by local farmers. Camp Washington is rolling out a new farmers market with help from Wave Pool and the Camp Washington Urban Revitalization Corporation (CWURC), set to take place at Valley Park every Thursday throughout summer and autumn from 4-6 p.m.  The first farmers market will take place on Thursday, July 7.

Due to a historic lack of quality food resources in the neighborhood, Camp Washington has been considered a food desert for years. This new farmers market is a step in the right direction, as it makes wholesome, nutritious foodstuffs available right in the heart of the neighborhood, meaning locals will have access to farm fresh fruit and vegetables among other delicious foods along with items made by local bakers, crafters and other vendors.

This farmers market is a temporary solution to a more widespread problem, as Wave Pool and CWURC puts it in a recent press release: “Many neighborhood organizations have stepped up, such as Welcome Project with their free meals, Washington Church of Christ with their food pantry and the Free Fridge, but this has not solved the issue of our residents not being able to purchase produce in the neighborhood.”

This farmers market not only benefits local shoppers, but it’s very enticing to burgeoning farmers and crafters, as the market only requires a weekly commitment instead of the more common seasonal commitment seen at other markets. CWURC says their hope is to provide a gateway for new farmers to enter the market.

On top of weekly shopping opportunities, the market will also offer art activities hosted by Wave Pool for both children and adults who’d like to show their creative side.

The Camp Washing Farmer’s Market is funded by the American Heart Association and Hamilton County Nonprofit Relief Funds. For more information, visit wavepoolgallery.org and cwurc.org.
