A new boutique hair salon is preparing to open in Over-the-Rhine this summer as Cincinnati-based color specialist Madeline Heile brings her vision for a hospitality-driven salon experience to Vine Street.
The upcoming salon, Pippi’s, will add a new beauty and service business to the neighborhood’s bustling retail corridor. It is located in a storefront space at 1502 Vine Street, which is leased by landlord Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC).
The salon’s name draws inspiration from Pippi Longstocking, the beloved character known for her independence, bravery, strength and unapologetic individuality. Heile hopes the spirit of that character will shape the salon’s identity as a creative and welcoming space.
After initially studying advertising and design, Heile decided to pursue hair school, a career shift she says she has never regretted. Early on, she explored bridal styling and general hair services before finding her true calling after meeting internationally respected master session hairstylist, creative director and educator Joseph DiMaggio. He has nearly 20 years of global experience leading backstage teams at New York, Paris, Milan and London Fashion Weeks, DiMaggio helped Heile refine her craft and specialize in advanced color work.
Most recently, Heile worked at a salon in Cincinnati’s Northside neighborhood, but she ultimately decided to open her own space, one designed around a philosophy that goes beyond traditional salon service.
Pippi’s, she said, will emphasize craft, intention and community while offering a more holistic approach to the salon experience.
“I began searching for a space in OTR, and after touring several options, the Vine Street storefront stood out,” Heile said. “It offered the room I needed to create the best possible salon experience. For me, that experience extends far beyond the chair — it’s about taking care of my clients and my team, while also having the space to host training, pop-ups and more.”
To bring the salon’s concept to life, Heile partnered with Cincinnati-based design firm Indio. A major priority for the project was creating a highly efficient layout that supports both a seamless client experience and a smooth workflow for stylists.
Once complete, the space will feature a clean, contemporary aesthetic designed to reflect Heile’s modern approach to hair artistry.
“The 3CDC team remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting and elevating women-owned businesses in OTR,” said Christy Samad, executive vice president of civic and commercial space activations for 3CDC. “Pippi’s is a natural addition to the Vine Street corridor and complements the existing mix of retailers, restaurants and service providers across these walkable blocks. We’re thrilled to welcome a talented new entrepreneur to the neighborhood – one who will add to its vibrancy and continued momentum.”
When it opens, Pippi’s will offer color, extension, cutting and waxing services. Heile also plans to launch a structured mentorship program aimed at aspiring hairstylists entering the industry.
The salon is currently seeking team members ahead of its opening. Heile expects to welcome the first clients through Pippi’s doors later this summer in Over-the-Rhine.
