Two culture warriors in the fight to keep the music alive are celebrating their own survival in two new CD compilations. Seattle's indie record store haven, Sonic Boom Records is kicking off its 10th anniversary this month with lots of live in-stores, a commemorative T-shirt designed by James McNew of Yo La Tengo and a CD collection of new tunes. The two-disc sets features Built to Spill, Animal Collective, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Jeremy Enigk, Spoon, The New Pornographers, Rilo Kiley and more.
Alternative Press has gathered 17 rare tracks selected by the magazine's staff to create Press Play: Volume 1, released this week on Photo Finish Records. Featuring previously unreleased songs by The Used, As Tall As Lions, Gallows and Hit The Lights, the disc has acoustic rarities by Bayside and Envy On The Coast and live tracks from Panic! At The Disco, Cute Is What We Aim For and Head Automatica.
The coffers of VH1's Save the Music Foundation get a fresh donation next week from the piggy bank of Nettwerk Records' For The Kids CD series. For the Kids Three! offers plenty of highlights and oddities worth searching out, an often surreal collection of "kid's music" that won't blow the skullcap off the adult driving the minivan to preschool and toddler gymnastics. Granted, the fear inducing "Wheels On the Bus Go Round and Round" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider" are lurking within, but hipsters Rogue Wave, Blitzen Trapper, Of Montreal and Mates of State keep it mighty fresh, like Anathallo's manic romp through "If You're Happy and You Know It," The Sippy Cups' slurp through "I'm a Believer" and one that PETA will hate — The Barenaked Ladies' "The Other Day I Met a Bear." One of the many exclusive tracks is destined for dada art-damage mix-tape heaven, Over the Rhine's plucky "The Poopsmith Song."
