The labor strike at DHL Express has ended, a Teamsters spokesperson confirmed to CityBeat on Dec. 19.

Around 1,100 workers at the DHL Express air hub facility in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (DHL-CVG) went on strike starting Dec. 7.

“Teamster members took a real stand for a better agreement and demanded that DHL, one of the world’s largest and most profitable delivery logistics companies, treat its workforce with dignity and respect,” said Teamsters general secretary-treasurer Fred Zuckerman.

Workers voted to unionize the Hebron, Kentucky, facility in April, citing low wages and unsafe working conditions. DHL told CityBeat during the strike that some unspecified contract requests from the Teamsters were “unreasonable.”

Organizing leaders told CityBeat that ramp associates are paid as low as $20 per hour to have life-threatening jobs at the delivery airport, the company’s largest logistics hub in North America. Workers load and unload nearly 400,000 pounds of cargo per day using equipment they described as dangerous and outdated. There were at least 22 emergency workplace injuries at DHL-CVG last year, including broken, crushed and dislocated limbs, according to Kenton County Airport Board records.

“This tentative agreement is a big win and provides us with a future we can look forward to. I want to thank my fellow Teamsters throughout the country who were in the trenches with us. All Teamsters, united in a common cause, helped make this possible,” said Collen Snell, a Local 100 member and an acting ramp lead at DHL-CVG.

DHL did not respond to CityBeat‘s request for comment on the tentative contract agreement by press time.

The tentative agreement will need to be ratified by the union before it’s finalized.
