More than a century after its start, the Cincinnati Open is reclaiming its original moniker.
Effective immediately, the tennis tournament will transition from the Western & Southern Open to the Cincinnati Open, according to a news release from the organization.
The tournament was called the Cincinnati Open when it first began in 1899 at the Avondale Athletic Club. Since 2002, the tournament has been called the Western & Southern Open.
Rebranding the tournament comes shortly after its owner, Beemok Capital, announced the event will remain at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason for the next 25 years.
“Returning to Cincinnati Open as the tournament’s name is an opportunity for us to celebrate its rich history at a time when we are also focused on a bold future and taking every possible step to grow and enhance the event,” said Bob Moran, president of Beemok Sports & Entertainment.
The change in name comes with a substantial investment of $260 million earmarked for on-site enhancements, designed to accommodate an expanded player field and an extended schedule beginning in 2025. Improvements include a comprehensive overhaul of the center court, where approximately 12,000 seats will be upgraded to premium stadium seating.
The 2023 tournament was nearly a total sell-out. More than 194,000 spectators came to watch Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic claim the women’s and men’s tournament champion titles.
The 2024 Cincinnati Open will be held Aug. 11-19. The dates shift one day later than past tournaments to accommodate the Olympic Games in Paris, according to the press release.
