Cincinnati Democrats are uniting behind Vice President Kamala Harris as she begins her campaign for the presidency.
Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio), Hamilton County Commissioner President Alicia Reece and others are coming together to lead The Cincinnati Rally for Kamala at MadTree Brewing on July 28. The rally comes after President Joe Biden decided to drop out of the race on July 21, a historic choice that cleared the way for Harris to run for president.
Biden stepped back from the election after calls for him to drop out ramped up around the country. After Biden’s shaky debate performance on June 27 spotlighted his struggle to maintain focus and articulate his ideas, Democrats became split on their support for the current president.
The 81-year-old President also announced he’d tested positive for COVID-19 on July 17, limiting his ability to campaign publicly on the heels of the Republican National Convention.
Key Democrats, including Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Former President Barack Obama, encouraged Biden to leave the race ahead of Biden’s announcement. Landsman and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) also called for Biden to step away from the election.
Now, Harris is the presumptive Democratic nominee, and Democrats around the country are launching campaigns for her presidency.
Landsman and Reece aren’t the only local Democrats supporting Harris. Many prominent Democrats in Cincinnati have taken to social media to express their support for the current vice president, including Mayor Aftab Pureval, State Rep. Dani Isaacsohn and several members of Cincinnati city council.
Democrats must nominate their candidate for President during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which is scheduled to start on Aug. 19.
