• New Ohio state treasurer Josh Mandel will be sworn into office today with special guest Cliff Clavin in attendance. Clavin, best known for chatting nonchalantly about current events at the bar on Cheers, is friends with Mandel and said technically the state doesn’t need a treasurer but if someone has to do it Mandel is the best choice.

• John Kasich took his oath as governor over the weekend but Ted Danson wasn’t there.

• Ohio has its first-ever black woman on the Ohio Supreme Court, bringing the number of all-time black justices to three.

• Washington, D.C. is America’s most-literate city even though its citizens are reading less.

• Researchers at Ohio State University found evidence suggesting that college students enjoy being praised more than sex, money, booze or championship football rings.
