People’s Liberty is offering a journey like no other — a journey into the past. People’s Liberty grantee Jennie Wright has created Experience Sankofa inside the Globe Gallery, which will take audiences “back in time” to experience two highlights of African-American culture through interactive performances, exhibits and cosplay.
Guests can take a trip to the Harlem Renaissance and listen to the sounds of the Cotton Club in the 1920s, and then stop in to see the rise of Hip Hop in the 1970s. “The word Sankofa means ‘Go Back and Get It’ in the Twi tongue of the Akan Tribe of Ghana,” says Wright in a press release.
“It is the perfect word to express this truly unique opportunity to explore and celebrate the rich, iconic Harlem Renaissance era and the still reverberating emergence of Hip Hop culture.” The Sankofa Maiden Voyage will take place Saturday (6-9 p.m. Feb. 2) and features special guests Triiibe, setting sail for Harlem “using the power of the mind and harmonics.”
The Cotton Club Experience runs Feb. 2-24 and These Are The Breaks, detailing the emergence of Hip Hop, runs March 7-24. Weekend experiences are $10; weekday museum exhibits are free and open to the public. People’s Liberty Globe Gallery, 1805 Elm St., Over-the-Rhine, experiencesankofa.com.
