Greater Cincinnati’s 10th-annual My Furry Valentine adoption event returns Feb. 6-14, and in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year it’s shifting to a virtual platform. The event is utilizing Adopets, an online platform that allows adopters to view adoptable animals, schedule times to meet potential pets, process payments, and complete applications and contracts. My Furry Valentine, which usually takes place at the Sharonville Convention Center, finds homes for hundreds of animals annually, and this year, some shelters are expecting even greater numbers due to the recent pandemic adoption boom. Katie Mosure, the event manager for My Furry Valentine, says that people spending more time at home and in isolation from friends family likely explains why some shelters might be experiencing more adoptions. “With social distancing and limited face-to-face activities taking place, people are looking for new ways to form connections, and furry friends are a great source of companionship,” Mosure says.  “COVID-19, as well as other 2020 world events, have put a lot of stress on our communities,” she continues. “Pets are natural de-stressers and can help lift spirits, so people are tapping into this source of joy during this taxing time.” Organizations like The Humane Society, The Pedigree Foundation, and Best Friends Animal Society strongly recommend that those thinking about adding a pet to the family pursue adoption.  According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, one of the largest humane societies in the world, 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized every year in the U.S.  “It doesn’t have to be that way,” Mosure says. “An estimated 17 million people will add a new pet to their families this year. If more of them would choose to adopt a pet instead of buying one from a pet store, breeder or online, we could end shelter euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals.”  “Not to mention your life will be enriched, a pet can bring companionship and great joy to your life!” she continues. While a lot of people are adopting puppies and kittens to keep them company during these Indoor Times, not all centers have experienced this boom in adoption. One of the agencies participating in MFV says that it relies on adoption events to find homes for dogs that are older and have special medical needs, and a lot of these events have been canceled due to the pandemic. “It’s been very slow this past year,” Shell Young, director of Liberty Acres United Rescue Animal Sanctuary, tells CityBeat. “The last event we were able to attend was actually My Furry Valentine last year, and we got eight dogs adopted that weekend, which is big for us.” Young is hopeful that this year’s My Furry Valentine event will end with some of the sanctuary’s older dogs finding loving homes. “Older dogs are great for people who have some dog experience and they just want a companion,” Young says. “To an older dog, you’re the center of their universe and they’re more than happy to just nap and wait on you.” While some of the sweet senior dogs from Liberty Acres will be available for adoption, the event will also feature dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and other small mammals from 14 other local rescue and adoption centers.  During the event, all dog adoption fees are $25 off, and cat adoption fees are as low as $10.   The virtual event will go live on Saturday, Feb. 6, with a look at available pets.  This slideshow highlights the event’s spotlight animals that are in need of a little extra love — seniors, bonded pairs, pets with medical or temperamental issues,  or simply ordinary-looking pets that are overlooked.

Calliope Animal Friends Humane Society “This gorgeous little fighter is Calliope! She came to Animal Friends after being hit by a car that fractured her spine. At first, she had trouble even moving her hind legs but the dedicated people here saw that she wasn’t ready to give up yet, and so we set her up in a loving foster home to give her time to heal! After two months of rest and TLC, Calliope can walk like a normal cat again!While her recovery is fantastic, she may never be 100% normal again. Because of where the spinal fracture is, she has lost some feeling to her bladder and bowels. We currently have her receiving acupuncture treatments to see whether we can help her regain feeling, but there is no guarantee that it will work. As a result of this fracture, she is unable to pee on her own, but caring for her is still very simple! She just needs to have her bladder squeezed twice a day, and her foster has even trained her to do it over the toilet! She has done great in her foster home, and spends most of her time hanging out around the house like a normal cat! Calliope is able to control holding her bladder, so there is no worry about her leaking pee around the house and she doesn’t even need a diaper. She is very sweet and loving, and she loves to snuggle with her humans or to sleep curled up beside them. She gets along very well with other cats, and doesn’t seem to mind dogs either, so she would make a great addition to almost any home!While she may be a little extra work, she makes up for it with lots of purrs and cuddles! It hasn’t been an easy road for Calliope, but now all she wants is a home to call her own and a family to love her!”
Chloe Animal Friends Humane Society “Chloe came to us as a very emaciated stray who was clearly not thriving outside. When she arrived she came in very sick and in need of medical treatment, so we sent her to a foster home for a short period of time to allow her to gain weight and recover from her upper respiratory infection. She recently had to have every last tooth removed due to dental disease so she will need a home willing to spoil her with a canned food diet for the rest of her life. Due to her illness, she was not able to interact with the foster`s resident cats but her foster reported she was extremely affectionate and sweet towards them. She prefers comfortable blankets to sleep on every night next to a warm fire and would be the perfect couch companion for an elderly person or couple. We`re not sure how she would do in a home with other animals, but may do best as the only pet in the home.”

Francisco Animal Friends Humane Society “Francisco is an incredibly handsome boy looking for his forever home! He is extremely sweet and loving, but he has something called FeLV, which stands for Feline Leukemia Virus. It’s a noncurable disease that affects a small percentage of cats every year leaving them to be more susceptible to things like upper respiratory infections, anemia, dental disease and more. While cats with FeLV can lead long, healthy lives, there is a chance Francisco may not live as old as some other cats. FeLV is transmittable to other cats but can’t be given to dogs or humans, so he will need to either be your only cat or adopted to a home with other FeLV positive cats. Francisco deserves a loving home as much as any other cat, please give him a chance to show you how amazing he is!Francisco is an incredibly sweet and loving old man, but he does need a specific home where he can thrive. Unfortunately, Francisco came to the shelter with severe mouth issues that have vastly improved but are still being treated. Therefore he will need an adopter that is able to continue his current treatment plan to resolve the infection in his mouth, which mostly includes steroids for an extended period of time. As a result of his advanced dental issues, Francisco does not have any teeth. Cats can still live perfectly happy and healthy lives without their teeth, but he will need to be on a canned food only diet for the rest of his life and will need to remain indoors with peaceful animals since he is unable to properly defend himself. He also has food allergies and needs to be fed a prescription limited- antigen canned food. While in foster, we learned that Francisco is scared of dogs, so he would do best in a home without dogs, although he may be okay in a home with very small and calm dogs that let him have his space. Since Francisco has FeLV, we have not been able to see how he does with other cats, but he came from a colony where he lived with many other cats so we assume that he would not mind another FeLV cat in the home, although he absolutely adores his humans so he would be perfectly happy alone as well.Francisco is a very sweet cuddle-bug who loves to spend time with his humans! His foster family says that he will follow them around the house, hangs out on the couch for movies, and LOVES to snuggle in bed all night! He is also a very respectful cat who has never tried to scratch furniture and sits very nicely for nail clippings, brushing, washing, or belly rubs! When he’s cuddling with his people, he loves to curl up in a lap and show off his nice loud purr while kneading the air with his front paws, so he would love an adopter who is home a lot and is looking for a kitty that loves to snuggle! While he knows that he is a little more work than the average cat, he lets you know each and every day how much he appreciates it by spending all his time purring and cuddling you!”
Dana Animal Friends Humane Society “Everyone say hello to Dana! This 5 year old pit bull mix came to us in May of 2020 severely emaciated, lethargic, with diabetes, and a big will to live. We fueled that fire inside of her with lots of TLC, and today Dana is doing wonderful. She is diabetic and will require special food and insulin for the rest of her life. The cost for these medications are not overly expensive, but you do have to have regular vet visits to ensure her levels are where they should be. Dana has some vision impairment due to the diabetes, but that doesn’t stop her living life. She can even chase a tennis ball and catch it! Dana is housebroken, and crate trained, and an overall joy to be around. She will require a home with no feline friends! Dana could do well with another dog in her home, as long as that dog was respectful of her vision impairment. She loves being doted on, groomed, and even taking bubble baths. Dana is very treat motivated and already knows sit and wait. She is not a fan of thunder, and fireworks, or other loud noises, so Dana will need some cuddle time during these events. She rides in the car well and is happy to tag along with you while you drive around town doing errands. Dana loves toys and will happily carry them around the house. Skarlet League for Animal Welfare “This little old lady lost her little old lady several months ago, and ended up without a home. Because she had been living with a senior human (who showed love through treats, but wasn’t able to exercise her), Skarlet was a bit chonky when she first arrived at the League. A host of medical issues had arisen as a result – she was basically immobile when we got her, because the extra weight had taken such a toll on her joints; and most of her teeth had to be removed due to infection. She’s been on an impressive weight loss journey, though, and now she feels like a young pup again! Well, maybe at least like a middle-aged pup. Skarlet does have Cushings Disease, and will need to be on medication for that for the rest of her life. But don’t let that stop you from meeting this sweet little survivor!”
Skip Friends of Franklin County Indiana Animal Shelter “Meet Skip. Skip is a 3-4 year old male Husky mix. Weights in about 65 lbs, Skip came into the shelter as a stray about a year ago. Somer League for Animal Welfare “This calico buxom beauty is the League’s second longest kitty cat resident – and there is no. good. reason! She’s a little bit chonky (aren’t we all). She’s got kind of a stubby tail (who said long tails were in fashion?). She’s an adult (but still only 4 years young! And kittens are NAUGHTY anyway!).But oh, her good points! We use Somer as our “helper” kitty – if we have a kitty who isn’t feeling confident, we add her to Somer’s room, because she’s the best mentor and buddy cat around. She has mentored so many kitties – and they’ve ALL gotten adopted before her! (her current best friend is black beauty Rachelle – and if you have room for a pair, they’re absolutely adorable together).Somer has the best kitty quirks. She LOVES water. She loves to have a kitty pool added to her room in the summer, and she’ll splash around in it. Add a robotic fish or some ping pong balls to the water, and you’ve made Somer’s day! We’ve even caught her SITTING in her water dish before. She’s obviously great with other cats – but she also loves people! She greets strangers with a soft rub around the shins, and then sits blissfully with you while you give her all the attention. It’s a mystery why Somer hasn’t found her new family in two years. But maybe it’s because she’s been waiting for you!”
Stitch Animal Friends Humane Society “Some people tell me I am out of this world affectionate. I came in with a hurt eye and the nice people at AFHS took great care of me and even sent me to a cool foster home. In that home I made friends with 2 kids aged 7. They were my best friends because they would give me lots of attention. They also helped me get better so I can find my forever home. I also like belly rubs and can get a little grumpy if I’m not fed on time..”

She was an owner surrender due to them working more hours and not being able to keep up with Tasha’s needs. Tasha is looking for a foster home that will be dedicated to giving her lot’s of physical exercise, as well as mental stimulation. Do you like how crosswords work your brain? Tasha loves the dog version of those things like puzzle feeders, Kongs, and other activities and toys that make me think. Do you enjoy running, hiking, or other fun activities? Well Tasha could be your next hiking buddy! Tasha doesn’;t like riding in the car, and her previous owners stated she has some separation anxiety. Due to her high energy and separation anxiety she cannot go home to an apartment. She needs a foster home that will be home for the majority of the day. The vet here at the shelter has diagnosed her with some arthritis in her hips. She hasn’t been around cats or children in her previous homes.”
Tribe League for Animal Welfare “Tribe is our longest resident – she just hit her 2nd anniversary on December 28. And shelter anniversaries are NO reason to celebrate. Why, you may wonder, is this sweet doll still at the League? Welllllll …. she can be … uh … a bit … standoffish with new visitors. And by “standoffish” we mean swatty and growly when you first come to meet her. But when you get to know Tribe, it’s a whole different story. She loves cuddles and play time with the people she’s comfortable with. And while she can get a bit overstimulated with too much snuggling, she lets you know when it’s time to stop. Tribe is showing all the signs of shelter stress here – it’s time for her to find her family. She does just fine with other cats, and would do fine with older kids (playful kittens or young, tail-pulling children are not a great fit!). Bonus if she can find a human who understands cat language and behavior (Tribe communicates well, if you know how to listen!).But mostly, we just need an adopter with a big heart for a down-on-your-luck furball looking for her Valentine.”
Xadah League for Animal Welfare “This spunky lady gets overlooked at the shelter a lot, which is ridiculous, because she is personality plus! Xadah is all cat, if you know what we mean. We mean … she’s kinda bossy. And she’s definitely going to want things to be on her terms. But she does it in the CUTEST WAY! She loves to oversee meal prep – and will definitely sit on the very thing you’re trying to use at the time. She loves to have you pay attention to her –until she doesn’t like it anymore, and then she’ll let you know. She’s such a funny, spicy little number. Xadah does really well with other cats, so add her to your crew and just appreciate the cattitude!”
Zeus Animal Friends Humane Society “Zeus is a 2 year old Pitbull mix looking for his forever home! Zeus is currently the longest term resident at Animal Friends Humane Society. He originally came to us from another shelter and has been with us since 11/04/2020. He is a handsome boy with a picture perfect smile! Zeus loves water A LOT! He is a total water bug who would love to be a lake dog and go swimming every day. One day he splashed around in our doggie pools he had to have surgery for a luxating patella. It’s been a long healing process, especially for a high energy boy having to be cooped up in a kennel. With a little time and patience we slowly have gotten Zeus back to being the happy goofy boy he is with some limited activities. Zeus does like other dogs, but he likes to be the dominant one in the pack so he needs a submissive friend to hangout with. Zoey Scott County Humane Society “Zoey is a 83lb, gorgeous 4yr old, black and white Huskie mix with the most beautiful blue eyes. Zoey is house trained, leash trained, has no food aggression with people. She does not like to share food with other dogs so she’ll need to be fed separately with no food left out. Zoey does well in a crate, with other dogs of like size, and mature kids. No cats. Zoey loves to cuddle and be petted, and will show you love. She’s not very vocal, but will alert you if someone is outside the home. Zoey will require a privacy fence. She’s laid back and when not loving on you she’ll be laying around. Zoey is currently on a diet because she needs to lose a few pounds. She is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all shots, worming, and flea treatments. She did test positive for Lyme’s disease and is taking medication for it. Zoey has a wonderful temperament and has been a delight to foster and will be a wonderful addition to your family.”
