Have you been considering adopting a new furry pal? With dog-friendly coffee shops, bakeries, bars and parks, Cincinnati is a great place to be a pet owner. While there are many good boys and girls looking for their fur-ever homes, there’s a lot to think about when making the decision to bring home a pet. What kind of breed is right for you and your lifestyle? What adoption agencies should you look at? If you’re serious about making this life step, adopting a pet is very rewarding — both for you and for the pet that gets a new home.

We’ve compiled a list of available pets from a few local adoption programs to help you on your mission of finding the pet that’s right for you. This is just a small glimpse into each agency’s list of adoptable pets. If you are interested in seeing what else they have to offer, visit their websites to learn more. Also, keep in mind that each program has its own application process and some take longer than others.

If you’d like to help but aren’t able to adopt right now, you can donate to one of these rescues or a number of other local pet adoption organizations.

Chief Age: 4 Months / Breed: Australian Shepherd & Bassethound Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Lucky Tales Rescue Inc. “Hello! My name is Chief. I am a 4 month old German Shepherd/Collie mix who is looking for a new home! We aren’t sure what size I will be, I have short legs and my paws aren’t really big but that is just a guess. I am all about playing. My favorite game is to play keep away from my brother. Whether it be a stick, stuffed animal, or something I’m not allowed to have I can always make it interesting enough to get my brother chasing after me! I tend to be independent and not big on being held but if you sit on the ground with me I will jump in your lap” Photo: Lucky Tales Rescue Inc.
Winnie Age: Young / Breed: Collie / Sex: Female / Rescue: Adoption First Animal Rescue “Hello!! My name is Winnie, but My dad likes to call me Big floof. I am the sweetest, most cuddly girl youll ever meet. My foster parents have only had me for a week, but they say Ive been the best girl going potty outside. I will stand by the door if I need to go potty, but recently Ive been ringing my foster parents bells. I am still a puppy, so I still have accidents but so far potty training is going great. My least favorite place is my crate. I will go in the crate on my own if you throw a treat in there. Treats are my FAVORITE! I still bark for a little while once Im in there, but eventually I fall asleep. I do so well at not going potty in my crate!! I love to play with the two other dogs and I really love little kids. Sometimes I get too excited and will jump on them, but I dont mean to make them fall. I am the best girl and my foster parents absolutely love me. I am ready for my forever home (with a fenced yard)! I even had my big surgery, next week I get my stitches out! Please be patient with me as I am still a puppy, but I promise to cuddle you in this cold weather.” Photo: Adoption First Animal Rescue
Pokey Age: Puppy / Breed: Beagle Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Hope Fur Pets “My foster family calls me Pokey, and I am a sweetheart. I love to run and play outside and I have the cutest little bounce in my step. I love to eat and I’m proud of the round belly I’ve managed to grow! I like to play with toys and run in the grass outside, but I also love my kennel or a really comfy lap when it’s time to rest. I am going to be a lot of fun for a family that loves to play! I’m all up to date on vet care appropriate for my age including heartworm prevention, spay/neuter, microchip and all vaccinations and ready to be the newest member of your home!” Photo: Hope Fur Pets
Squishy Age: 4 Months / Breed: Domestic Short Hair Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue “Meet the cuddliest little kitten around! Squishy is a four month old fuzz ball who is as friendly and as playful as can be! Squishy loves people and starts purring immediately when you touch him. He has been exposed to cat-friendly dogs and other cats in his foster home and does great with everyone. Squishy would love a home with another furry playmate to keep him company!” Photo: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue
Lucy (Mamma Mia) Age: 4 Years / Breed: Boxer Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: Sweet Dream House Rescue “Sweet MAMMA MIA is looking for a new furever home. This lovely boxer mix girl came to the rescue with her 8 puppies at the end of last year. She had been living on a chain in deplorable conditions before we got her. Mamma Mia went to an adoptive home but she and the resident dog are not a good match so she needs a new home. Dogs, like people, can be picky about their friends. Mamma Mia is a love sponge. She will soak up every ounce of attention you’re willing to give. She’s around 4 years old and weighs 65-70 lbs. Mamma Mia is housebroken and crate trained.” Photo: Sweet Dream House Rescue
Marshmallow Age: Young / Breed: Domestic Medium Hair / Sex: Female / Rescue: Purrfect Friends “Marshmallow was a super mother to three kittens born in December 2020. She is now done with her duties and is ready to be adopted to a wonderful forever family. She loves to be brushed, talked too. She sometimes will talk back. Marshmallow is just now starting to learn how to play with cat toys. Her favorite so far is the laser light. She likes can treats and laying in the sun that comes thru the window. She is a little timid a first, but with some coaxing she will feel comfortable in new situations. Marshmallow is laid back, sweet and gentle. She would be a great addition to a low stress household, preferably with no other pets. ” Photo: Purrfect Friends
Roan Age: Adult / Breed: Australian Shepherd & Bassethound Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue “If you’ve been looking for a happy go lucky best friend to call your own, look no further because Roan is here to make all your dreams come true! Roan is a one year old 50 lb Australian Shepherd/Basset Hound mix. While his breed is a best guess, Roan certainly has the nose of a hound and his favorite thing to do on walks in sniff, sniff, sniff. He stops whenever he sees a person though, because he’d rather wag his tail and say hi! Roan is both crate-trained and house-trained. He knows how to sit, is a great listener, a fast learner, and looooves his treats! He is a goofy boy that is looking for someone to give him lots of pets and a loving home to call his own! ” Photo: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue
Zenobia Age: Adult / Breed: Domestic Short Hair / Sex: Female / Rescue: Ohio Alleycat Resource “Zenobia is definitely queen of the lobby, and she’s not afraid to remind everyone (cats and humans) of that on a pretty regular basis. She doesn’t take well to being loomed over, and has an impressive left hook for any feet that walk by her too close or too fast, as well as a tendency to scream whenever she’s picked up. She’s much more in her element when she’s up at eye level or higher (the better to see and admire her beauty, obviously). If she’s not in her 7 foot tall cat tree, she can usually be found striking a pose on the front desk or on top of the other cats’ playpens. She really is a sweet girl, and just wants someone to love her (and maybe make her social media famous, because she adores having her picture taken). Zenobia is a fiend for wet food of all kinds but is still able to eat dry, even though she no longer has teeth. She appreciates the finer things in life but will settle for a faithful human who will offer her constant adoration. If you’re looking for a pretty girl who’s always down for a good gossip sesh, Zenobia would like to volunteer to be your new BFF.If you have a soft spot for a sassy and kinda bossy little lady and a camera itching to be filled up with pictures of this stunning girl, fill out a questionnaire on our website today!” Photo: Ohio Alleycat Resource
Lucky Age: 7.5 Years / Breed: Domestic Long Hair / Sex: Male / Rescue: Crazy Cats Animal Rescue “Lucky is incredibly sweet and absolutely LOVES attention. He is a total lap cat and comes when he is called. His foster mom says he is literally “the perfect cat!” So, adopting him would may YOU lucky! Lucky was found wandering in an apartment complex, begging for food, and sleeping on people’s cars. He had already been neutered and had a microchip. We made contact with the person on the microchip, and, long story short, Lucky stayed with us. Lucky is about 7-8 years old with a weepy eye and missing teeth. He will need plenty of yummy canned food as his daily diet. Lucky is also FIV+ which means he has a weaker immune system. FIV is not contagious to other cats. As an indoor-only cat, with good nutrition and regular vet checkups, FIV+ cats live long, normal, healthy lives.” Photo: Crazy Cats Animal Rescue
Teddy Age: 9 Years / Breed: Chihuahua / Sex: Male / Rescue: Chihuahua Rescue and Transport Inc. “May I introduce myself? I’m Teddy, a nine-year-old, five-pound male chihuahua, fully vetted, vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on my heartworm preventative. I’m a shy guy, so it’s hard to speak up like this, but I’m in need of a loving home and hoping you can help! I’ve had a rough life before coming to the rescue. My owner was a backyard breeder who didn’t take good care of me or give me much social interaction. Because of that, I’m scared to meet people and hesitant to trust them. Since I’ve been a part of my foster family, I’ve started learning about love and affection, and I’m pretty interested! I’m just going to need some time to figure it all out. I get along great with other dogs and even cats, and my beautiful long fur is the envy of all my doggy friends! I have a sweet nature too, but I need a patient, experienced chihuahua owner–one without kids–who is willing to give me time to get comfortable in my new home. A fenced yard is also important in case I get scared and try to run. I need to have my kibble moistened since I only have two teeth left. I also need help learning not to mark in the house, but I’m happy to wear a belly band to protect your home! It’s not my fault that I wasn’t given the care I needed to be a sociable, affectionate dog, but I’m afraid I’ll never find a forever family because of it. Will you give me a chance to turn my life around? I know I’m worth it!” Photo: Chihuahua Rescue and Transport Inc.
Tobias Age: 1 Year / Breed: Beagle / Sex: Male / Rescue: Sweet Dream House Rescue “Tobias is a young beagle, about 1 year old and 26 lbs. Tobias is a chill, medium energy guy, good with people and other dogs. He loves to run and play and requires a physically-fenced yard. He has the sweetest face and perfect long, velvety beagle ears. He would love a furever home with a playful fur sibling. Tobias is housebroken, crate trained and fine with cats.” Photo: Sweet Dream House Rescue
Carlton Age: 3 Years / Breed: Shar-Pei Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Furgotten Dog Rescue Inc. “I am a 3-year-old Shar-Pei mix weighing 55#. Don’t let my looks fool you, I am a big baby! I am friendly with people when I am not on my turf (house/yard). I will need time (anf lots of treats) to warm up to a stranger. I walk well on a leash, but will react toward animals on a leash. I am animal aggressive in general and need to be an ONLY PET in the home. I have not been desensitized to small children. They kind of freak me out for some reason. Teens are cool 🙂 What can I say I am a typical, poorly socialized Pei. My dominant and territorial nature is normal, but difficult to manage. I will require consistent follow through with my training including socialization with other dogs (on a leash on walks) and territorial behavior. ” Photo: Furgotten Dog Rescue Inc.
Priscilla Age: 2 Years / Breed: Domestic Short Hair / Sex: Female / Rescue: Purrfect Friends “Priscilla is a gorgeous grey & white sweetie. Can you believe she was found living outside during this cold winter!?! We just couldn’t let her live outside another cold day! Priscilla was likely born spring of 2019. Someone got her spayed and put her back outside – but this is one friendly girl! She is good with cats and humans and is happy to be inside. She gives kisses and is very affectionate” Photo: Purrfect Friends
Molly Age: N/A / Breed: Domestic Short Hair / Sex: Female / Rescue: Save the Animals Foundation “Sweet as a honey dip donut! That’s our Molly, a lovely calico who a STAF volunteer fed outside a donut concession for several years. It’s hard to imagine that this friendly cat was struggling outside. She has the plushiest coat to bury your hands in, will crawl into your lap and purrs up a storm at the least attention. Molly has tested positive for FIV, the feline immunodeficiency virus. This condition is non-life threatening and is not transmissible to humans. If you are committed to good annual vet care, you will share many years with this wonderful kitty. So come enjoy this delectable treat today!” Photo: Save the Animals Foundation
Owen Age: 5 months / Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Sex: Male / Rescue: Furgotten Dog Rescue Inc. “Little Owen is a 4.5-month-old pocket Treeing Walker Coonhound weighing 17lbs. His life before rescue was not kind as his little body was deprived of food and water, to the point of being skeletal. Fast forward to today! Owen has gained 10lbs and all puppy, with no concern about finding food. He loves to play with toys, adores his bed to store his toys and loves to play with his adult foster friends. Owen loves to go on walks with his foster family and is amazingly smart on learning a routine. Walks great on leash and loves to run. If you are one to run or hike, he is perfect, especially if you have other dogs. Owen is crate trained and working on being housebroken. Owen is also a huge snuggler. He prefers to be held and will snuggle his little head under your chin. He truly has one of the best well rounded demeanors one could ever hope for in a forever companion. ” Photo: Furgotten Dog Rescue Inc.
Fern Age: 3 Years / Breed: Pekingese & Chihuahua Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue. “This adorable ball of spunk is Fern! Fern is a 5 lb, 3 year old, Pekingese/Chihuahua mix. She had a rough start to life and, as a result, is very timid. Fern is very nervous when meeting people and will need a very patient owner who is willing to dedicate time to continue working with her. She desperately wants to trust humans and has come a long way while in her foster home. She will require a home with older children or adults only as chaos and loud noises make her nervous. She absolutely loves napping on the couch, playing with toys, chewing bones, and playing with the other small dogs in her foster home. She gains confidence from watching the other dogs in the home and will require a home with another social and confident dog to help show her the ropes. Fern is crate trained and potty trained and is making great progress walking on a leash. She has so much love for life and, with continued training, is ready to trust humans. She is ready to find a forever home that can provide her with all the love, patience, and guidance she deserves.” Photo: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue
Abigail Age: Adult / Breed: Domestic Short Hair/ Sex: Female / Rescue: AAPCATS “I am a sweet young girl, a few years old. I searched all over and finally found a rescue to take me in before the winter set in. I am shy at first, but will warm up to be near you. I probably won’t be a lap cat, but will be a sweet girl to have in your home.” Photo: AAPCATS
Angelique Age: 9 Months / Breed: Domestic Short Hair / Sex: Female / Rescue: Purrfect Friends “Angelique was found in terrible shape – skin and bones – in a feral colony by a rescuer in Springboro! She luckily got rescued and is a healthy girl now. She is BFF’s with black kitty, Sole, so we really want to adopt them together.” Photo: Purrfect Friends
Athena Age: Adult / Breed: Domestic Short Hair / Sex: Female / Rescue: HART “Athena was brought to HART when she was abandoned and pregnant with 10 kittens! Athena had a pretty traumatic birth and only had two live kittens from the litter. Athena was a FANTASTIC mother and her kittens thrived under her care! Now that her kittens are grown, it is time for her to find her forever home! Athena is super loving and playful and will rub all over you for days 🙂 She absolutely loves to eat and can never get enough wet food! She would do better in a house without other animals as she enjoys being the princess of the house.” Photo: HART
Babyface Age: 10 Months / Breed: Tabby & Domestic Short Hair Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Lucky Tales Rescue Inc. “La la la la… I’ve got the cutest little Babyface! Sing with me!!! Baby faaaaaaceee… la la la la la la la… Aren’t I just the most debonair cat you’ve ever seen? My name is Babyface and I am, if I do say so myself, a gorgeous male Tabby who is looking to grace your house with my presence. I am about 9-10 months old, I love my people, attention, sleeping in the same bed as you, RIGHT next to you actually. I’m a very easy going cool cat, and, hey, I’m good with dogs and other cats, too. I am neutered, up to date on shots, FIV/Felv negative, and microchipped!” Photo: Lucky Tales Rescue Inc.
Dolly Age: 2 Years / Breed: Golden Retriever Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: Sweet Dream House Rescue “Beautiful DOLLY is a 2 year old 55 lb. Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix girl looking for a special furever home. Dolly was not well socialized with people, and as a result she was very fearful. She’s been working with Mike at BULLETPROOF DOG TRAINING, who has worked wonders building her confidence. She loves going for walks and hanging out with her people. She needs a quieter adult home, one where strangers aren’t in and out constantly. She requires a patient adopter willing to work with her to gain her trust and continue to build her confidence. SDHR will provide follow-up training support as needed. If probably goes without saying she needs an adopter who’s good with a brush to keep her beautiful coat mat-free. Dolly is fully housebroken and should be okay in a crate. Dolly requires a home with a secure physically fenced yard.” Photo: Sweet Dream House Rescue
James Bond Age: 1 Year / Breed: Domestic Short Hair / Sex: Male / Rescue: Purrfect Friends “A lover who hugs!! James Bond came out of a kill shelter as a kitten. He was adopted at one point and returned because he was too affectionate (whatever that means). He loves to love! He is a hugger and a great lap kitty. He likes to help with litter box clean up duty and he has a purr motor that goes on and on. James likes other kitties but will do well in a household with one or two other cats.” Photo: Purrfect Friends
Jethro Gibbs Age: 1.5 Years / Breed: German Shepherd Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Sweet Dream House Rescue “Attention NCIS fans! Say hello to Special Agent JETHRO GIBBS, a German Shepherd/beagle mix with a nose ready to sniff out criminals. Or treats. Or squirrels. He’s looking for a furever home. Ruggedly handsome Jethro Gibbs is a lively boy, brimming with energy and enthusiasm. He’s 1-2 years old and a sturdy 38 lbs, but needs to drop a couple of pounds. He’s a lively boy who loves to zoom, but will melt into you for pets. His medium length coat is ever-so-soft. Jethro needs a bit of work on his manners, but he’s a bright boy who will learn quickly. He needs an active home where he will get plenty of exercise. He must have a physically fenced yard. Jethro would make a great training partner for a runner. He may have too much energy for a home with small children..” Photo: Sweet Dream House Rescue
Mandela Age: 5 Years / Breed: Domestic Short Hair / Sex: Female / Rescue: HART “Mandela, or as her foster mom calls her, “big mamma”, is a 5 year old tabby that was returned to Hart after having a tough time feeling safe in a household with three young kids. Mandela does best in a calm environment with one or two adults and is still acclimating to her two cat sisters. She is very afraid of loud noises but if you talk to her, her response will turn calm. Mandela has the softest coat and loves ear rubs. She will take some time to get used to her new space but within a few weeks she will be out and about. Also, Mandela is not fond of being shut in small spaces once she’s allowed the run of the house. Mandela will make an amazing pet for someone who is chill like her!” Photo: HART
