Have you been considering adopting a new furry pal? With dog-friendly coffee shops, bakeries, bars and parks, Cincinnati is a great place to be a pet owner. While there are many good boys and girls looking for their forever home, there’s a lot to think about when making the decision to bring home a pet. If you’re serious about making this life step, adopting a pet is very rewarding for you and the pet that gets a new home.
We’ve compiled a list of available pets from a few local adoption programs to help you on your mission of finding the pet that’s right for you. Age: 3 Years / Breed: Alaskan Malamute / Sex: Male / Rescue: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue
“Say hello to Jack! At 132 pounds, hes a very large, very handsome 3-year-old boy whos looking for an extra special forever home. True to his breed, Jack is intelligent, curious and strong-willed and if given the chance, he will try to rule the roost. Hell need a family that has breed experience and is committed to training, exercising and providing this big boy with lots of structure, while also helping him to lose a little weight. He has a strong pack mentality and once he understands his place in it, youll start to see his outgoing, goofy personality shine. He loves people and prefers to be with them as much as possible. Because of his size and the need for clear, consistent pack order, his forever home should be kid-free. Jack is dog and cat friendly, but he would prefer to either be the center of his familys attention or share his home with a submissive 4-legged friend. Hes crate and house trained, knows a few basic commands and is eager to work for a treat. If you think Jack would be the perfect addition to your pack, apply today! Jack’s adoption fee is $250.”
Photo: Louie’s Legacy Animal RescueArby G
Age: 5-6 Months / Breed: Domestic Short Hair Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: Cat Adoption Team
“Arby G. is between 5 and 6 months old. She has a lot of kitten energy and LOVES her toys. So far, she hasn’t met a toy she doesn’t like. She has a very sweet disposition and always comes to greet me when I walk into her room. It is sometimes difficult to get anything done, since she wants to wind in and out and around my legs until I pick her up for a little snuggle time. When you hold her, she will reward you by turning on her purr motor. So far, she loves every cat she meets, but she has not been upstairs to spend time with the dogs. Judging by her personality, I don’t expect she would have a problem with dogs as long as introductions are done correctly. All of our cats and kittens are spayed or neutered prior to adoption, up to date on shots, combo tested negative for FIV/Leukemia and microchipped.”

Age: Young / Breed: Domestic Short Hair Mix / Sex: Males / Rescue: Cat Adoption Team
“Brothers from another Mother – Church and Cheese are a very special pair that have a Bromance so must go to a home together. They both have mild to moderate CH (Cerebellar Hypoplasia) but it doesnt stop them from playing like mad or anything else for that matter. Must be a home with no stairs. All of our cats and kittens are spayed or neutered prior to adoption, up to date on shots, combo tested negative for FIV/Leukemia and microchipped.”

Age: 4 Months / Breed: Hound/Beagle Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: Furgotten Dog Rescue, Inc.
“Nessie is a 4-month-old Hound mix weighing 20#. Nessie was an owner surrender at a local animal shelter. Shes a wild child, but what puppy isnt? Nessie is full playful puppy energy. To meet her exercise needs, she requires a physical fenced yard and a young/energetic doggy playmate who can keep up. Good with cats and kids. Crate trained and as house trained as any 4-month-old pup.”

Photo: Sweet Dream House RescueBrady
Age: 1.5 Years / Breed: Airedale Terrier Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue
“Brady is a 1.5 year old Airedale mix! This handsome boy is 70 pounds of puppy energy. He loves to run, play, but most importantly, do zoomies! Brady’s ideal forever home is an active and patient family ready to work on his manners and training. He is a puppy in an adult body, needing plenty of daily exercise. While Brady is great with people, he is not always aware of his surroundings, so he would do best with older children who are stable on their feet. He loves his food and does great in his crate once settled – he tends to bark a bit initially, making him an unsuitable candidate for apartment life. Brady does well with the other dogs in his foster home. He would particularly love another dog his size to run and play with, as he may annoy a pup that doesn’t have the same energy level. He is looking for a cat-free home. Brady has never had an accident in his foster home and is working really hard on his training. His future family should be prepared to set boundaries and work on his basic training and manners. He would greatly benefit from a fenced in yard. He’s a big baby of a boy who will be a fantastic dog once he has additional time and energy put into his training.”
Photo: Louie’s Legacy Animal RescueBayard
Age: 8 Years / Breed: Beagle Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Save the Animals Foundation
“Bayard and another beagle sidekick were picked up as strays. Pleasantly plump at around 40#, Bayard was certainly well fed–so we suspect he’d not been on his own for long. After a brief stay as a county pound, his pal got adopted and Bayard upgraded to a room at STAF. His tail has not stopped wagging since, putting him in the running for happiest pup on the planet! (See video for demonstration.) Super friendly and calm, Bayard (est. birthday 2012) loves taking leisurely walks, sniffing everything in sight beagle-style. While he has passed evaluations for doggy daycare, he does get jealous and grumbly when it comes to sharing human attention with another dog. May be happier as an only child. Please check back for more info as we get to know Bayard better. If he makes your beagle-lovin’ heart go pitter-patter, email us and let’s chat!”
Photo: Save the Animals FoundationBobby Gene
Age: Kitten / Breed: Domestic Short Hair/Tabby Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Purrfect Friends
“BOBBY GENE is an adorable tabby & white male youngster (with cute little white feet & chest). He was a baby at a rural Indiana shelter, then came to Purfect Friends so we could help him find a wonderful, loving new home. He gets along great with the other cats & kittens at his foster home – he’s playful and affectionate and curious and active and totally lovable! (B’date mid August) He’s a little bit on the shy side; takes awhile to get comfortable in new situations; so a tranquil household without young children would be best for him.”

Photo: Sweet Dream House RescueCarlton
Age: 3 Years / Breed: Shar-Pei Mix / Sex: Male / Rescue: Furgotten Dog Rescue, Inc.
“I am a 3-year-old Shar-Pei mix weighing 55#. Dont let my looks fool you, I am a big baby! I am friendly with people when I am not on my turf (house/yard). I will need time (and lots of treats) to warm up to a stranger. I walk well on a leash, but will react toward animals on a leash. I am animal aggressive in general and need to be an ONLY PET in the home. I have not been desensitized to small children. They kind of freak me out for some reason. Teens are cool 🙂 What can I say I am a is a typical, poorly socialized Pei. My dominant and territorial nature is normal, but difficult to manage. I will require consistent follow through with my training including socialization with other dogs (on a leash on walks) and territorial behavior. Free in-home training comes with my adoption fee.”
Photo: Furgotten Dog Rescue, Inc.Dorothy
Age: 7 Months / Breed: Boxer Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue
“This is Dorothy! Dorothy is a 7 month old boxer mix and weighs about 35 lbs. She loves to play fetch, follow her humans around the house, and LOVES attention. She doesn’t mind being in her crate and we are working on potty training. Dorothy is full of energy, but will easily match your energy if you’re trying to relax. She is living with three large dogs and cats in her foster home and is going great with them. She can be timid with other dogs at first and is definitely the submissive type, but warms up very quickly. She is still learning not to jump on people when she’s excited and how to properly walk on a leash, but is very smart so I’m sure he will learn her manners quickly. If you think Dorothy would be a perfect match into your family, apply today! Dorothy’s adoption fee is $400.”
Photo: Louie’s Legacy Animal RescueBruiser
Age: 6 Years / Breed: Terrier, American Pit Bull / Sex: Male / Rescue: Cincinnati Animal CARE
“My name is Bruiser, and let me tell you about my story. I’m an older fellow who came in with a couple of bald spots, and some achy joints. My dents and dings have made me the shy sort, so I’m gonna need a patient person that I pick for myself, because I like to choose my friends and only the best will do. It’s not certain what training I’ve had, so please be prepared to start fresh from the basics: crating, housebreaking, and obedience. Anything I may already know should be considered a bonus. Ask about me today.”

Age: Young / Breed: English Bulldog / Sex: Male / Rescue: Queen City Bulldog Rescue
“Vaccinations up to date, spayed / neutered, special needs. I have a heart condition and will require daily medication. Medications: Vetmedin + Enalapril.”
Photo: Queen City Bulldog RescueMajor
Age: 5-6 Years / Breed: Collie / Sex: Male / Rescue: Fred’s Mission Rescue and Sanctuary
“Major came into rescue in June 2020 as an owner surrender. He was matted solid covered in fleas and ticks. He was also heartworm positive. He has finished his treatment and in 2 months get another bloodtest to determine where we are. He needs to be on heartguard year round for the rest of his life. He is very sweet and so smart. We are requiring a 5′ physical fence for him. Please do not apply if you have invisible fence or will walk him on leash. He has had 5 months of leash walking and tether in his foster home and it is not enough. He needs to move around and be free inside a fence. He is housebroke. Does not care for a crate, does better out of one at night. He is great with kids, but would recommend no small kids as he knocks the foster kids down. He is 5-6 years old.”
Photo: Fred’s Mission Rescue and SanctuaryHugo
Age: 3 Years / Breed: Chihuahua / Sex: Male / Rescue: Fred’s Mission Rescue and Sanctuary
“Hugo was pulled from Campbell County Animal Shelter. He is deaf. He is approx 3 years old and 12 lbs. He is a sweet goofball who is very active. If you startle him he will growl. He is not housebroke. Working on crate training. He does well with most dogs, does not do well with dominant males. Update1: doing much better potty outside. Crate trained long as not over 8 hours. Loves toys!!”
Photo: Fred’s Mission Rescue and SanctuaryStatler
Age: Adult / Breed: Cocker Spaniel / Sex: Male / Rescue: East Coast Boxer Rescue
“He is a cocker spaniel. He would do best in a home as the only dog and no kids under 12. We would definitely prefer spaniel experience. He lived his life as the boss and he is the type that if he doesnt wanna do something, hes NOT gonna do it. Lol. He can be a total lovebug too. He would also do better in a home where someone is home most of the time. He is also crate and house trained.”
Photo: East Coast Boxer RescueCory
Age: 16 Years / Breed: Domestic Short Hair/Tiger Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: AAPCATS
“She is about 16 years old. She will need time to learn to trust new people. Once she dose, she loves to be petted. Her owner was in a nursing home and when taken by family friends…they found she is afraid of all other cats. They put her outside and eventually called the rescue. She has a heart murmur. She has to be the only cat. She would do better in a low activity home. In our foster home she has to be isolated by herself because of other foster cats that she is afraid of. She trust people, but until she knows you, she still fears being picked up and carried… She will need time and patience…but will be a very sweet girl as she is here and we were told she was in her original home.”

Age: 2 Years / Breed: Tabby/Domestic Short Hair Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: Purrfect Friends
“Kittens were found at an industrial warehouse – one was all alone and one was about to be trucked off property! We took in all the kittens…set a trap and viola! We caught the mom – who ended up being very friendly! So meet Shelby. She has likely had multiple litters in bad situations. Her babies are ready for homes (Aston and Stude) and so is she – no more babies for her! She is so sweet and gentle. Born likely fall of 2018, she is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and negative for felv. Adoption fee $50.”
Photo: Purrfect FriendsSniglet
Age: 10-12 Weeks / Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Sex: Female / Rescue: Sweet Dream House Rescue
“Sweet SNIGLET is an Australian Cattle Dog-mix puppy looking for a furever home. She’s 10-12 weeks old and 16 lbs. Sniglet will probably be 40-45 lbs. when fully grown. She’s an energetic pup who needs a furever home with a fenced yard and another playful dog. She’s not an apartment dog. Sniglet is working on her housebreaking. Herding breed pups are not good choices for novice adopters or homes with small children. If you’d like to meet Sniglet, please fill out a foster-to-adopt application at dreamhouserescue.org.”
Photo: Sweet Dream House RescueStar
Age: 5-6 Months / Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Sex: Female / Rescue: Adore-A-Bull Rescue
“STAR is a 5-6 month old beautiful (inside and out) little girl who was found on the side of the road with her litter mates back in January. She was extremely sick and fragile when her foster mom got her but she is a fighter and a warrior surviving Parvo and a few other ugly parasites. As she got older and stronger her seriously goofy quirky personality started to shine. STAR is extremely adventurous and has all the natural curiosity of a puppy. She is also extremely smart. If she were human she would either be the class clown or the teachers pet!! When you met her you would never know that she is deaf and has some limited vision issues but neither of these slow her down. She has learned sign language and responds excellent to correction and training. She is a champ in her crate and sometimes sleeps 9-10 hours through the night (perk to being deaf, I guess! ?) The excitement and happiness that she gets when she spots her human and foster siblings is absolutely heart-warming. STAR is a very easy puppy who will entertain herself for hours with a simple toy and is content just taking a nap next to her foster mom while she works from home. She’s a quick learner, like any puppy, and will be easy to train to get along with anyone. She already gets along great with her foster siblings including a 185 pound English Mastiff which is her best buddy. . If you are looking for a goofy, happy, loving, easy life partner look no further STAR will keep you in stitches with her antics and will melt your heart with her sweet loving personality.”
Photo: Adore-A-Bull RescuePoufi-tail
Age: 5 Months / Breed: Domestic Medium Hair/Tabby Mix / Sex: Female / Rescue: Purrfect Friends
“POUFI-TAIL is a gorgeous, soft, silvery grey tabby with fawn undertones. Her tail is fluffy; and has a crook or a kink in it, so it sort of bends at about 3/4 of it’s length, which makes her tail look shorter, but all poufy! She’s sweet and affectionate and loves to play with a feather wand! She’s such a cutie; about 5 months old. 3 kitties were found wandering around in a rural neighborhood in Adams County. They weren’t in too bad of shape although another one had been attacked by a dog and killed; we took these 3 in to help find new loving homes – they were immediately treated for fleas, worms & earmites, and provided with lots of good, nutritous food and will be available for adoption soon! Adoption fee includes Spay or Neuter, vaccinations, combo-tested – negative for FeLV & FIV, and micro-chipped. The adoption fee is $70.00. (or since kittens do so much better and are so much more fun – double your pleasure/double your fun – get 2 for $100!!).”
Photo: Purrfect FriendsOreo (Yo-yo)
Age: 8-9 Years / Breed: Domestic Short Hair / Sex: Male / Rescue: Purrfect Friends
“Isn’t OREO the most unique looking kitty??? His black & white spotted coloring makes him really stand out. (and then there’s his one-sided curly mustache!!!) Oreo has a calm & tolerant, easy-going purrsonality, and is very social and talkative. He likes to cuddle under the bedsheets and play with you while in bed; and then he loves to sleep next to you. He’s about 8-9 years old, sometimes playful & active and wants to be where you are. He was initially raised with children; was very good with them and has lived with other cats and dogs. His preference would be as an only cat, as the king of his castle! (or maybe only 1 or 2 other animals) This kitty is originally from Georgia, then lived in Texas, then in Ohio. His original family couldn’t afford to keep him; he had spent a good part of his earlier life living with an untreated ear infection/inflammation that became chronic. He had an ear polyp removed from his left ear twice (1n 2018 and 2019); but it grew back yet again almost immediately. Vet recommended ear canal removal surgery; he was in so much pain that we didn’t have much choice but to go ahead with it – performed on 11/19. He had difficulty recovering; and ended up at the emergency vet a few days later with extreme difficulty breathing – there was fluid in and around his lungs; they identified it as congestive heart failure, possibly brought on by the anesthesia used for his ear surgery! So now he’s on daily heart medication and a diuretic (morning and night); thank goodness he’s easy to pill! His heart condition will be lifelong; it can be managed with medication; but he’s going to need monitoring and occasional vet checkups. He has also shown to have an allergic reaction to topical flea meds, so we’ve found that an oral pill form of flea medication (if/when needed) seems to work quite well for him. He’s been neutered, vaccinated, combo-tested – negative – for feline leukemia (FeLV) & FIV, de-wormed & de-flead, and micro-chipped. The adoption fee is $50.00.”
