Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center temporarily closed its doors due to the coronavirus pandemic in March, and after several months, they will be reopening to the public this Friday, July 24 — with new COVID-19 safety precautions in place.
Using the city’s historical ties to the anti-slavery movement, the mission of the Freedom Center is “to inspire modern abolition through connecting the lessons of the Underground Railroad with today’s freedom fighters.” The center explores courage, cooperation and perseverance through films and artifacts from the Underground Railroad to contemporary times.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will reopen their permanent exhibits, which include: Escape! Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad; Invisible: Slavery Today; The Slave Pen; and The Struggle Continues.
They will also have their special exhibit Motel X open, a recreated motel room experience which explores human trafficking through immersive storytelling, statistics and ways to identify and combat it.
According to a press release, the Freedom Center will be operating at 20% capacity and will be requiring timed tickets “to help manage crowd capacity and ensure proper social distancing.”
Masks will be required and they are implementing social distancing markers and signage throughout the museum. They will also be increasing their sanitizing and cleaning to ensure a safe and clean environment for their guests.
