A new look at the secret art collection of Theodor Seuss Geisel, best known as children’s book author and illustrator Dr. Seuss, is coming to a Greater Cincinnati art gallery this September.
You know The Cat in the Hat, but now you’ll get to see more of the “Cat Behind the Hat.” From Sept. 5-7, select works from The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection, provided by Ann Jackson Gallery in Roswell, Georgia, will be on display at Gallery Veronique in Symmes Township.
“For over 60 years, Dr. Seuss’s illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. His artistic talent went far beyond the printed page and yet, to this day, his Secret Art Collection is virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) created paintings and sculpture, which he secreted away at the Dr. Seuss Estate,” reads a press release on the exhibit.
Visitors can explore and acquire both known works from Dr. Seuss’ children’s books, as well as from The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss Collection, which features works based on decades of artwork Dr. Seuss created at night for fun. Works include wacky and imaginative items, like the three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures, with names like Carbonic Walrus, Two-Horned Drouberhannis and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast. Works also feature Dr. Seuss’ cat, who was the protagonist in several of his Secret Art paintings.
According to the event press release, despite demand, no limited-edition artworks from Dr. Seuss were conceived, authorized or created until the Secret Art project was started in 1997, six years after his death. Each of these pieces of art is an estate-authorized limited edition that has been adapted and reproduced from Dr. Seuss’ original drawings, paintings or sculptures, and each one has a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature.
The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection can be seen at Gallery Veronique Friday, Sept. 5, from 4-8 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 6, from noon to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 7, from noon to 4 p.m. You can learn more about the collection here.
